“Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;”
Several years ago my father-in-law said to me, “Allen, if you ever get the ball rolling, don’t ever let it stop.” He continued by saying, “It is always harder to get the ball rolling again than it is to keep it rolling.” He was making a comment on God blessing a work. He had experienced the blessings of God in his work in the Philippines, and he remembered how hard it was to get the work to the point where God blessed it.
In the verse above, Job reminisced about God’s blessings of the past. He wanted God to bring him back to the days when His blessings were plenteous because he remembered all the honor that those blessings brought. Eventually, Job saw those blessings again, but it was at the time of hardship when he realized what he used to have. Let me share several observations from this situation in Job’s life that will help you to enjoy the blessings of God better.
First, Job never said it was easy getting the blessings of God. Everything that Job mentioned in this chapter took hard work. We live in times when many want God’s blessings without hard work, but let me remind you that God’s blessings are always a result of hard work. God blesses action, not stagnation. You can wish all day long that you had God’s blessings, but you will never get them until you work hard enough for God to send them. If you want God to bless your business, work harder than everyone else and you will realize those blessings. If you want God to bless your ministry, work harder than every other ministry and you will see God send His blessings. The greatest secret to seeing God’s blessings on your ministry is hard work. God’s blessings will never come without hard work.
Second, you often don’t know what you have while God is blessing. Because you don’t know what you have when you have it, you had better enjoy everything God is currently doing. We can often be blinded by our desire for more that we don’t see what God is currently doing. My friend, rejoice in every blessing that God is currently giving you. Rejoice every time you see a soul saved. Rejoice when you see growth in your ministry. Rejoice when God is blessing your family or business. The blessings of God, no matter how big or small we think they are, should always be appreciated because we don’t know how long we will have them.
Third, once you lose what you have, you will want it again. Life has a way of taking away the blessings we once used to enjoy. Let me encourage you not to minimize what you have. When what you have is gone, you should rejoice that God saw fit to even bless you. Just to have the blessings of God on your life for one day is far more than what you deserve. There is going to come a day when what you have won’t be there, so you had better rejoice in what you have and cherish it while you have it.
Fourth, just because you lost it doesn’t mean that God can’t do it again. What I love about the story of Job is that God blessed the end of his life more than what he wished he had back when he lost it. Let me encourage you to never give up on desiring and working for God’s blessings. God is a God of miracles and power, and your situation is not too hard for Him to bless. Keep striving for God to do it again; you never know when God will choose to bless your hard work.
