Keeping Your Purity

1 Corinthians 7:37 “Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well.”

Nobody has stayed pure on accident; they have always stayed pure on purpose. In a day when a young person losing their purity is no longer a shameful thing, I believe it is still possible for young people to stay pure. I believe that every young person should have the desire to do things right so that they can walk down the aisle pure, as a virgin, just like God intended for them to do.

However, staying pure and keeping your virgin is not going to be done on accident. In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul addresses the importance of purity and how to stay pure. The verse above shows the importance of staying pure when it says, “…he will keep his virgin, doeth well.” I know that many often refer to the girl being a virgin, but you will notice that God says that “he” that keeps his virgin doeth well. In other words, it is just as important for young men to be a virgin as it is for young ladies. So, what can a young person do to keep their purity?

First, realize you are always capable of committing fornication. The reason God addresses the subject of fornication is because He is trying to keep the virgin pure. In other words, God knew that any virgin could lose their purity, and that means you. When you think you are above losing your purity is when you are in most danger of losing it. Overconfidence about your ability to keep your purity is the downfall of anyone. When you realize you are capable of losing your purity is when you will set up guards in your life to help you to achieve the very worthy goal of staying a virgin until the day you are married.

Second, realize that keeping your purity is a heart issue. Before a person ever loses their purity physically, they lose it in their heart. This is why God says in the verse above, “Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart,…” You have to guard your heart and determine in your heart that you are going to stay pure. Never let anyone or anything influence your heart that would cause you to lose your purity. Before a person loses their purity physically, they think about losing their purity in their heart and mind. You must so guard your mind so that nothing can expose you to something that would cause you to start thinking about losing your purity.

Third, you must have power over your will. Your alone times are critical to staying pure. You can't avoid being alone when you are single, so you must guard yourself against the portals that could feed impurity. I personally feel it is best that you don't live alone as a single person because there is too much time on your hands that you can get yourself into trouble. Your will and desire to stay pure will be tested the greatest when you are alone.

Fourth, give yourself to God; staying busy serving God will keep you from having time to do the wrong things. Verse 32 commands the single person to give themselves to caring for the things of God. My friend, while you are single, the best thing you can do to stay pure is to stay busy serving the LORD. By the way, if you stay busy serving the LORD while you are single, you will discover other singles busy serving the LORD, which is the best way to discover a spouse. If you stay busy serving the LORD, you won't have time to lose your greatest asset other than salvation, your purity.
