Keeping Your Savour
“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.”
Jesus says that the believer is to be two things to the world; they are to be the “salt of the earth,” and the “light of the world.” Both elements are caused by being different. One small light can be seen in a world of darkness, and the believer should be sure to make sure their light is shining brightly so that it can be seen further in this dark world.
However, salt is what is used to make food taste better. If salt no longer has its savour, it no longer makes the food it is sprinkled upon taste any better. It doesn’t take much salt to make food taste better; in fact, it only takes a sprinkling of salt to make a plate of food better. Likewise, many can be influenced by one believer if they keep their savour. There are several things that Jesus is teaching the believer when He admonishes them to keep their savour.
First, He is saying that salt is no longer good if the salt has lost its taste. You cannot be the salt of the earth when you are no different from those around you. God doesn’t want you to blend into the world, but He wants you to be different from it. The more you look like the world, the less you influence the earth as the salt of the earth. On the other hand, the more you look like Christ, the more taste your Christian walk gives to the world.
Second, salt is no longer good if the salt has lost its excitement. Your excitement for the things of Christ will help others to stay excited for Christ. If you are more excited about the things of the world, you will find that your testimony will lose its impact on those around you. If you want your testimony to continue to influence others around you, you would be wise to focus on being more like Christ than trying to be more accepted by the world.
Third, salt is no longer good if the salt has lost its enjoyment. Having a joy in life in spite of adverse circumstances makes your life different from the world. If you keep your joy through life’s adversities, others around you will see the difference that Christ makes in your life. You cannot have a defeated spirit and make a difference to others around you. People want to be around someone who has joy no matter what they face. Keeping your savour as salt is done by staying joyful in your walk with Christ.
Fourth, salt is no longer good if salt has lost its appreciation. You need to embrace being a Christian if you want your life to be the salt of the earth. Apologizing for what you believe will not help you to make a difference to those around you. Embrace the walk of faith and you will find that you can influence others around you.
Let me ask you; has your walk lost is savour as salt as a believer? People will never be attracted to you if you are like everyone else. The thing that will draw people to you is by being different. If you blend in with the world, you cannot make a difference in it. Let me encourage you to stop worrying about trying to be accepted by the world, and become more focused on trying to be more like Christ. My friend, let the four things mentioned above season your life as a believer. If these four things will season your life, you will find your life having the savour it needs to be the salt of the earth.
