2 Peter 3:18
“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
The Christian life is not as difficult as some may try to make it. Living the Christian life is common sense living that results in God’s favor and blessings, blessed relationships, and joy at the end of life. Sin is the only thing that complicates and makes the Christian life seem to be difficult; however, when you remove sin from someone’s life, you remove the difficulties and complications that keep them from enjoying their walk with God and service to Him. There are five key words found in the verse above and in 1 John that will help you to enjoy your walk with God.
The first key word is grow. The verse above says, “But grow in grace…” How are we going to grow? You grow by gaining a knowledge of Jesus Christ. There are two ways you gain knowledge of Christ. The first way is by studying the Scriptures. The more you know about God’s Word, the more knowledge you gain about Christ. One of the reasons you must walk daily in the Scriptures is so that you can grow in the LORD. The second way to grow in your knowledge of the Saviour is to walk with Him in service. You will learn more about Christ by serving Him than you will by sitting and doing nothing. Your walk with Christ will be enhanced when you realize that you don’t just serve Him, but you serve with Him. God’s Word comes alive and makes more sense to you when you are serving with Christ.
The second key word is walk. 1 John 1:7 commands the believer to “walk in the light.” To walk in the light means to do right. You cannot enjoy your salvation when you are walking in the sins out of which God saved you. God didn’t save you to go back and live the same old life, but He saved you so you could enjoy the new life in Christ. If you want to enjoy your Christian life, you are going to have to stay away from those things that would steal the joy of serving with Christ, and sin is that thing that always steals that joy.
The third key word is fellowship. 1 John 1:7 continues to say, “we have fellowship one with another.” Your associations will determine your joy in the Christian life. You cannot have associations that try to pull you away from Christ and enjoy walking with Him. You cannot enjoy the Christian life and have associations whose lives contradict the Christian walk. You may have to live and work in the world, but you don’t have to associate with them in their activities. You must be careful about your fellowship and associations if you want to enjoy the Christian walk.
The fourth key word is confess. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Keeping sin from cluttering your heart through confessing your sins to Christ will help you to enjoy your Christian walk. You are going to sin, but you must quickly confess it to God if you want to have a good conscience towards Him.
The fifth key word is forgiveness. 1 John 2:9 says, “He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.” People are going to do you wrong in life, but forgiveness is the only way to keep yourself from bitterness. You will find it much easier to forgive others when you serve with Christ, keep the right fellowship, and realize that God is quick to forgive you when you sin.
