1 Thessalonians 1:3
“Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;”
There are a lot of things you can do in life, but the greatest thing you could do is to live to make a difference in others. There are many things that are worthy of doing in life, but helping others to get closer to the LORD and leading people to Christ is the greatest work of which you could be a part. You will never make a difference in the lives of others if you don’t perform the life-changing actions mentioned in the verse above. Let me share with you four life-changing actions that must be a part of your life if you are going to make a difference in others.
The first life-changing action is never “ceasing your work of faith.” The “work of faith” is doing what is right. For instance, going soul winning, running a bus route, teaching a Sunday school class, working in your ministry, or pastoring a church are all a work of faith. It takes work to do the works of faith, but it takes character to continue them when you don’t see the fruits of your work. It is easy to start a work of faith, but it is hard to continue the work of faith. When the initial excitement of the work is gone is when character must drive you to continue doing the work. When you are being recognized for what you are doing is when it is easy to do the work of faith, but when people tend to forget about what you are doing is when character must tell you to keep on doing the work of faith. The excitement of the work of faith will fade at times, but if you are going to make a difference in the lives of others, you are going to have to determine not to quit.
The second life-changing action is to have a “labour of love.” When you continue to do the “work of faith,” you will find people who will get saved and start walking the Christian life. However, these who get saved are going to take work to see them become what they are supposed to be. Nobody ever became who they were supposed to be without someone laboring in love to see them conform to the image of Christ.
The third life-changing action is to have “patience of hope.” In other words, those you invest in are going to fail. Not only will some fail, others you invested in will seem to quit. You must never lose hope in people if you are going to make a difference in their life. Someone who gives up quickly on people will never make a difference in others. You must have a hope that your “work of faith” and “labour of love” will one day take root in the heart of those to whom you are investing your energies. My friend, it doesn’t matter how many times they fail or how long it takes, you must never lose hope in people that the LORD is doing a work in their heart.
The fourth life-changing action is remembering. I know this sounds strange, but somebody invested in you and didn’t give up on you. One of the things that will keep you from quitting your work of faith and labor of love, and one of the things that will keep your hope alive in others is to remember that somebody didn’t give up on you. Somebody kept working and laboring and hoping that you would one day become a great tool in the hand of God. Remembering that someone invested in you in spite of all that you did will keep you going when it seems your works, labor and hope are in vain. The work of Christ isn’t easy, but if you forget what someone has done for you, you will quickly give up on others and miss the greatest blessing of seeing others change.
