Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
When a person gets saved, they are saved forever. It does not matter whether others think you are saved or if you feel that you are saved; your eternity was settled forever when Christ saved you. However, your ability to witness and influence others for right IS determined by how you live. You will notice in verse above that it says, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” The key to this verse is walking “after the Spirit.” In other words, there is condemnation to those who walk after the flesh. Is this condemnation a condemnation of the soul? No! Walking after the flesh is an outward condemnation of those who see how you live.
The word “condemnation” means a strong disapproval. God is saying that people will not approve of what you say to them if you walk after the flesh. There are three condemnations that you have to deal with if you choose to walk after the flesh. Let me share these with you.
The first condemnation you will have to deal with when walking after the flesh is a condemnation of your conscience. Here is the reason many doubt their salvation. When you walk after the flesh, your conscience works on you and condemns what you are doing. The Devil uses this condemnation to get you to doubt your salvation. I have found that many people who come to me for help with doubts about their salvation are simply walking after the flesh, and that is where their doubts are coming from. My friend, your conscience tells you when you are living wrong because if you are saved, the Holy Spirit becomes your conscience, and He will condemn your actions when you are walking after the flesh. You must start walking after the Spirit if you want to cease the condemnation of your conscience.
The second condemnation you will have to deal with when walking after the flesh is condemnation from others. You can say that you are saved, but others will see what you are doing and will ask, “If you are saved, why do you live like the world?” You may not like it that others are condemning you, but the answer to stopping this condemnation is to start walking after the Spirit. I would much rather be criticized because I walk after the Spirit than to be condemned by others because I walk after the flesh.
The third condemnation you will have to deal with when walking after the flesh is the condemnation of your works. Your works tell everyone what you are walking after. If you are walking after the Spirit, you will have works that will tell others that you are following God. However, if you are walking after the flesh, your life will reveal no fruits of righteousness that result from walking after the Spirit. It is not hard to tell who a person is walking after because their fruits reveal whether they are walking after the flesh or after the Spirit.
Now, let me ask you, are you living a life of condemnation because you are walking after the flesh? You can turn your life of condemnation around to a life of commendation by ceasing to walk after the flesh to walking after the Spirit. The life of commendation is a wonderful life because of the great fruit that walking after the Spirit produces. If you don't like the life of condemnation, then start walking after the Spirit.
