“The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.”
We live in times when people are continuously pushing the boundaries. It is not just in the world where the boundaries are being pushed, but even in the Christian realm many are moving the lines of “right and wrong.” Sadly, those who live outside the lines are those who seem to be the ones who are praised for their courage not to live within the confines of what they call, religion.
However, the psalmist says in the verse above, “The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places…” The lines that the psalmist is talking about is the heritage of the LORD. The heritage of the LORD is the way of holiness by which the Scriptures command us to live. God doesn’t want his people to live outside the lines of their heritage, but inside the lines of their heritage. God shows several benefits for those who live inside the lines.
First, living inside the lines gives you an appreciation for those who invested in you. Only those who cross the lines despise the heritage they were given. There is nothing wrong with the old paths that have been handed down to us from the previous generation. You will find when you live inside the lines that you will appreciate those who battled to keep those lines clear. You will find that you will appreciate the clarity they gave to your life by defining those lines and living within them.
Second, living inside the lines gives you the direction of what you should do in life. Verse 7 shows that living inside the lines gives you “counsel.” I have often told people that the LORD will providentially guide you if you will just do right. My friend, the best way to always know what you should do will be found by living inside the lines of holy living.
Third, living inside the lines gives you the proper desires. Verse 7 continues to show how living inside the lines gives you instruction in the “night seasons.” When you live inside the lines, you will find your desires will be right when others are doing wrong. Many live out their wicked desires in the night seasons, but those who live inside the lines find holy desires and thoughts that will please the LORD in the night.
Fourth, living inside the lines places you in godly places. Verse 8 says, “I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand…” You will never fail to find God’s presence in your life when you live within the lines of His Word. It is amazing how those who live outside the lines are the ones who are always coming up with “new” ways of living when the Word of God has never changed how the Christian should live. You are going to have to choose to live within the lines of God’s Word if you want to always be in the godly places of righteous living.
Fifth, living inside the lines gives you a heart of gladness. Verse 9 shows the result of living within the lines when it says, “Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.” My friend, you will not only find the joy of the LORD inside the lines of holy living, but you will also find gladness of heart which brings a positive attitude and outlook towards life. Let me encourage you to retrace the lines of God’s Word so they can be clearly seen, and live within those lines so that you can enjoy the gladness of life that those lines give.
