1 Chronicles 12:8
“And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains;”
The Gadites were one of the tribes that chose to follow David and help him to establish his throne. According to the verse above, the men of Gad had several qualities that made them fit for the king’s service. The characteristics of the men of Gad are characteristics needed in men today so that they can be fit for the LORD’s service. Let me share with you the seven characteristics where men need to be fit for the LORD’s service.
The first characteristic needed are men of separation. The Gadites separated themselves to serve David. One of the greatest needs in churches today is for men to get involved in the LORD’s work. Sir, you will never please the LORD until you separate yourself to serve Him.
The second characteristic needed are men of might. We live in times when men are weak. Men need to be strong, capable of making decisions, and able to endure the hardness of working. Soft men fold in the day of battle. Men of might are men who never run from the hard tasks, but embrace them and take them as a challenge to complete.
The third characteristic needed are men of discipline. It took discipline for the Gadites to learn how to handle the shield and buckler. Disciplined men are able to control their emotions and will do what they are supposed to do every day. One of the greatest needs of our day are men who have the discipline to do what they are supposed to do without being told to do it.
The fourth characteristic needed are men of balance. The Gadites handled both the shield and buckler. Men need to be balanced individuals who will fight for right, but also have the ability to love those around them. The more balanced a man is, the more capable he is to contribute to the LORD’s work.
The fifth characteristic needed are men of character. A man should never have to have someone looking over his shoulder to do what is right. The Gadites did right because they had character. The test of your character is what you do when nobody sees you. Men fit for the LORD’s service are men who do right because they have the character to do right.
The sixth characteristic needed are men of focus. The Gadites were men who had the faces of lions. Every man needs to get focused on what he is supposed to do without letting the peripheral things of life sidetrack him from his obligations. If you will stay focused on truth and doing right, you can greatly benefit the LORD’s work.
The seventh characteristic needed are men who are unfazed by the battle. These men had the faces of lions, which means the battle never fazed them. One of the greatest needs today are men who don’t look for others to fight with them, but are focused and unfazed to do what is right even when others never fight. Real men don’t look for battles, but they don’t run when truth is attacked.
These seven characteristics are imperative for the strength and growth of a church. Let me ask; are you fit for the LORD’s service?
