1 Chronicles 12:8
“And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains;”
One of the greatest needs in society are men who are men. When you look at the broken homes in society, the glaring reason these homes are broken is because of the lack of male leadership in the home. When looking at the church’s inability to impact their city, one of the reasons is because the men are sitting on the sidelines while their wife and children are serving the LORD. God’s work doesn’t just need the wife and children serving the LORD, but God’s work needs the whole family unit serving Him if it is going to make an impact on society. In the verse above, there are several things that separated these men from the rest that would help every person, and especially men, to become people of might.
First, these men were willing to separate from those who would hinder them from doing what they needed to do for the LORD. You will never do anything great for the LORD if you are not willing to separate from people who will hinder you from doing the great works of faith. Separation isn’t always separating from the world, but sometimes you must separate from those who would hinder you from serving God. If what you are doing for God is important, separating from those who would hinder you will not be difficult.
Second, these men were not weak, but they were men of might. In other words, they had the stamina to continue when others failed. You will never do anything great for the LORD if you don’t have the stamina to continue when times get hard. Having the might to continue is critical to seeing God doing great works through your life.
Third, these men were prepared. You will notice that these men were “fit for the battle.” Preparation is never done on accident, but it is accomplished by having the character to equip yourself through studying God’s Word and praying. You cannot be spiritually out-of-shape and expect to make it through life’s battles unscathed.
Fourth, these men were not afraid of the battle. When the verse above says that these men had the “faces of lions,” it was saying they were not afraid to fight. You can’t avoid battles and be who God wants you to be. Too many people get upset when everything doesn’t fit their model of doing things. You will not be able to fight for the LORD if you are not willing to adapt to every situation and be courageous in hard times.
Fifth, these men were knowledgeable of the weapons of warfare. Ephesians 6 shows the armor of the believer. If you are not properly equipped spiritually, and knowledgeable of each piece of armor, you will not make it through spiritual and life battles without being injured. Men of might don’t just know about the armor, but they use it properly so they may be the soldier for Christ that He wants them to be.
Sixth, these men were serving men. These men being “swift as the roes upon the mountains” only means that they were serving in the battle. God needs men who are swift to serve Him, and not swift to avoid the spiritual battles for the sake of worldly affairs. My friend, you will never be a person of might for God until you start serving Him. Get involved in your church, for serving is where God builds your strength.
