Momentum
Joshua 6:27
“So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.”
I was watching a competition where men had to see who could pull some vehicles the quickest to the finish line. I noticed how a couple of the men got their momentum going, but they slipped and lost all their momentum which caused them not to finish. The key to them having a chance to win was to get the momentum going and not losing it.
My father-in-law has said to me numerous times that if I ever get the ball rolling in my ministry, never let up because it is always hard to get the momentum back once you lost it. It is not an easy task to get spiritual momentum going, but it is harder to get it back once you have expended all of your energy trying to get it going.
A phrase that should jump out at you in the verse above is, “So the LORD was with Joshua…” This verse is the key to getting the momentum in your ministry and in your Christian walk. So many believers have gotten the momentum going but lost it out of careless living, and they never got the momentum back once they lost it. The verse above shows several keys about getting the spiritual momentum in your life and keeping it.
First, you must be with the LORD before you can get spiritual momentum. As much as the LORD was with Joshua, so Joshua had to be with the LORD. The LORD cannot be with if you are not with Him. I am not talking about getting saved, but I am talking about you doing right so that you can get His presence and power in your life. Joshua proved that He was with the LORD when he stood against the ten negative spies. He proved he was with the LORD when he waited for the man of God for forty days on the side of the mount while everyone else was taking their clothes off and dancing to the world’s rock music around a golden calf. Joshua was available for the LORD to be with him because he was with the LORD. You will never get God’s power on your life until you are first available for His power by spending time with Him. Simply put, why should God empower you when you are doing nothing that needs His presence and power? The first step to getting the spiritual momentum going in your life is to be with God in service.
Second, you must get the LORD to be with you. The verse above says that the “LORD was with Joshua.” In other words, he didn’t get so busy serving the LORD that he didn’t spend time getting God’s power on his life. My friend, you will never get the spiritual momentum going in your life under your own power. You will spin your spiritual wheels in the sand by doing God’s work alone. You need God’s power to get the spiritual momentum going, and that never comes without spending time alone with God getting His power on your life.
Third, never take for granted the great combination of you being with the LORD and the LORD being with you. It would be terrible to take this combination for granted and become careless with your living and lose the sweet presence of the LORD’s power. When you look at the next verse, you will see that sin became a hindrance to their momentum. Being careless about the spiritual momentum will cause you to think you can do it all alone, and many have lost God’s power because of being careless about it. When you get this winning combination that results in spiritual momentum, don’t let anything steal that momentum away.
