My Lot
Numbers 33:54
“And ye shall divide the land by lot for an inheritance among your families: and to the more ye shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer ye shall give the less inheritance: every man’s inheritance shall be in the place where his lot falleth; according to the tribes of your fathers ye shall inherit.”
The key to happiness in life is not in getting what you want, but in accepting your lot in life and determining to make it better. In the verse above, God told Moses to divide the land by lot for the inheritance for each tribe and family in Israel. One thing that is very evident about the lots for each tribe and family is that these people didn’t get to choose their lot. The lots of each tribe and family were given to them by God. It says in the verse above that every man was given his “place where his lot falleth.”
Do you find that where your lot has fallen in life is not a lot that you wanted? Everyone has either had that lot to fall in their life, or they will at some point have something happen in life that they did not want to happen. Let me give you some suggestions about how to deal with your lot in life.
First, you can’t change your lot even though you don’t like it. When these tribes and families were given their lot, they didn’t have the choice to return it for something they liked. Your lot in life is yours to live with whether you are serving the LORD or living in the world. Many people have chosen to quit serving God because they didn’t like their lot in life, but quitting everything that they did for God did not change their situation. Always remember there are no returns with what life has dealt to you.
Second, God could have given you any other lot in life, but He chose not to give you another lot. One of the most critical things you must accept is that God could have placed you in another situation in life, but He chose not to because He knew that your lot is what you needed so that you can be a greater help to others. What you must understand is that if God gave you another lot in life, that other lot would still have things that were unpleasant and that you would not like. No matter what lot God has given you in life, He gave it to you because He knew you could handle it and use it as a tool to help others.
Third, what you do with your lot in life will determine the joy you have in life. You can let the external circumstances of your lot steal your joy, or you can accept your lot and enjoy God’s presence that walks with you in your lot. If you choose to quit with your lot in life, you will find yourself becoming a bitter person who is angry at God and everyone who you think is responsible for your lot. However, you can accept your lot as God’s divine plan for your life and find that there is great joy inside of the unpleasantries of your lot.
Fourth, take your lot and make something better out of it. Herein is the key to finding joy with your lot, and that key is not to sit and do nothing with your lot, but decide to make the most out of it. When God gave these tribes and families their lot, they were to take it and develop it into cities to be a blessing to their children. My friend, the best thing you can do is take whatever your lot is in life and learn to develop it into a tool to help others. You don’t have to like your lot in life, but you can come to peace with it when you choose to make something great out of it to help others. What are you going to do with your lot in life? My hope is that you accept it and use it to be a great help to others around you.
