No More That Way
Deuteronomy 17:16
“But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.”
One of the instructions God gave to Moses concerning any king who ruled God’s people was that he should never cause the people to return to Egypt. God delivered them from the land of Egypt, and He didn’t want them to go back for any reason. God emphatically told Moses, “Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.”
Egypt has always been a symbol of the world. The Believer must realize that God saved them so that they would never again have to go back under the bondage of the world. The world may seem alluring at times, but no matter how attractive it may seem, “Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.” Several things I want to point out to you about going “no more that way.”
First, don’t ever forget how bad the world was to you. There are two types of Believers. The first type of Believer is the one who was saved out of a life of sin. The second type of Believer is the one who was saved from a life of sin. In both cases, a life of sin and its consequences have been averted. You must never forget what the world was doing to you or what it would have done to you. When you hear the testimonies of those who were saved out of sin, it should cause you never to desire to go that way. The greatest thing about salvation is that no matter what side of a life of sin you are in, it will save you from a lot of heartache. Be careful that you don’t forget that.
Second, going no more that way is a determination that you won’t consider the world’s way. If you leave the door open to go back to the way of the world, you will find that the Christian life is not as alluring as it used to be. You must determine that going back to the world is no longer an option. My friend, you must stop leaving the door open to go back. There is nothing in the world that will bring you joy. Have you forgotten the heartache the world caused that provoked you to look to Christ for deliverance? If you are not going to go that way anymore, you are going to have to determine that it is no longer a consideration.
Third, living a life of faith is the only way to keep yourself from returning to the world. Faith always has a forward vision. The life of faith has no rear view mirror. The only way you will have complete victory over the world is to get that forward vision that is acquired by living a life of faith. It is the life of faith that caused Abraham never to look back when he took his journey of faith. It was the life of faith that caused Noah to continue building the ark for one hundred and twenty years. It was the life of faith that caused Moses to forsake the pleasures of Egypt for the suffering of the people of God. As these people had every opportunity to return, they didn’t because their life of faith is what kept them looking forward.
Which way are you looking? Whichever way you look is the way you will eventually go. If you keep looking at the world and what you think you are missing out on, you will eventually go back that way. However, if you keep looking forward by faith, you will find that the world will have no allure or pull in your walk with the LORD. It all comes down to which way you are looking. Let me encourage you to stop looking back towards the world and look forward towards faith. It is the forward vision that will keep you from returning to that way.
