1 Samuel 3:8
“And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.”
Samuel was just a young boy, and it is understandable that he would not be able to discern the voice of the LORD. Three times the LORD called Samuel while he was in bed, and each time he responded to the voice of the LORD by running to the preacher to find out what he needed. It wasn’t until the third time that Eli perceived that the LORD was trying to talk to Samuel and that Samuel learned that what he was hearing was the LORD’s voice.
Responding to the voice of the LORD and obeying it is the key to spiritual victory and reaching your potential for God. However, one may wonder how they can know whether it is the LORD’s voice or if it is just some feeling on the inside. Perceiving the LORD’s voice and call in your life is paramount to you becoming what the LORD wants you to become, and to doing what He wants you to do. Let me give you several observations about perceiving the LORD’s call.
First, the man of God did not perceive it was the LORD’s call immediately. When God called Samuel the first time, even Eli didn’t know that God was calling him. One of the most important things you can do when you nor the preacher know if the LORD is trying to tell you what to do is to wait until the LORD confirms His call by calling again.
Second, Samuel was listening but didn’t know the LORD’s voice. You cannot hear the LORD’s voice in your life until you begin to listen for it. The problem in the average believer’s life is not that the LORD is not speaking to them, but it is that they are not listening for His voice. You are sure not to hear the LORD’s voice if you are not listening for it.
Third, Samuel responded each time to the LORD’s voice. The key to knowing the LORD’s voice is responding. It doesn’t matter how many times the LORD speaks to you if you don’t respond when He speaks. If you made it a practice to immediately respond to the LORD’s voice, you would find that He would speak to you more often.
Fourth, Samuel learned the LORD‘s voice. The more that the LORD called Samuel, the more he learned what the sound of the LORD’s voice. You will learn more about the sound of the LORD’s voice in your life the more you respond. What you will find is the LORD’s voice is often that quiet tugging on your heart to tell you to do something. It is at this moment that you must learn to respond.
Fifth, responding to the LORD‘s voice is what helped him to discern the LORD’s call and moving in his life. The more you respond to the LORD’s call and moving in your life, the more you will find the LORD will move you to do something for Him. One of the most important areas you can learn to listen to the voice of the LORD is in the area of soul winning. People often say to me that they never see anyone get saved, but my response is that they are not listening to the LORD’s call to talk to someone. When you are going somewhere and you hear that little voice in your heart to talk to someone you see about the LORD, you must respond to the voice because only the LORD will move you to talk to someone about getting saved. You will see more people get saved if you will respond to that little voice in your heart about giving the Gospel to someone whom God has led across your path.
