“And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.”
In every crowd, you always have people who are there for different reasons. This was no different for our Saviour. He was teaching a crowd of people, and in this crowd were Pharisees and doctors of the law. While Jesus taught, four men had a friend who had been crippled by palsy, and they desired to bring him to Jesus so he could be healed. Because they couldn’t get to Jesus for the crowd, they climbed up on the roof and tore a hole in it just to let their friend down in front of Jesus so He could heal him. Their love for their friend and their faith in Jesus is evident. Three groups are represented in this story, and each group’s perception caused them to get a different outlook on what Jesus did.
The first crowd was the Pharisees and doctors of law. This crowd was critical of Jesus because He said, “Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.” Their critical spirit caused them to miss people getting saved and a crippled man being healed. A critical perception of everything that is done for the LORD will cause you to miss the blessings of God’s miraculous power. Those who are critical never see the good that happens because they are blinded by their critical spirit. You have to be careful that you don’t look at your church or the Christian life with a critical eye to see what is wrong. You are sure to see something wrong if you are looking through a critical mindset; but, your critical mindset will cause you to miss some of the greatest blessings of the LORD.
The second crowd present were these four men whose faith caused them to tear a hole in the roof to get their friend to Jesus. It was the faith perception of these men that caused Jesus to heal their friend. A faith perception has no obstacles that are too big that Jesus doesn’t have the power to overcome. You will find when you have a faith perception that everything that could be criticized is simply removed for the sake of God doing something through your life. Christian, if you will start looking at the Christian life through the eyes of faith, you will find that there is nothing you won’t overcome for the LORD so that His power can be seen and that others will be helped. Those with a faith perception will always be a small crowd, but they are the ones most responsible for the LORD doing something in their ministry because they have put no limits on the LORD.
The third crowd present is not mentioned because they were just present. They were there just to hear Jesus teach and to watch Him perform miracles. The sad part about this crowd is that they are neither contributing or obstructing the work going on. They are simply watching what is going on as spectators. Many churches are filled with this crowd who only comes to watch and not participate. The sad part about this crowd is that they are missing out on being a great part of the LORD working in their church or ministry. You can be a spectator, but spectating never gave the fulfillment of joy you receive by helping others get to Jesus.
Let me ask you, which crowd are you? I hope that you are not of the critical crowd who, no matter what happens for good, never sees the good. I hope that you are not the crowd who is wasting your time being a spectator. Let me encourage you to be the crowd who sees through the eyes of faith. There are many people you can get to Jesus if you will only see the potential that your faith has if you use it to get people to the Saviour.
