Faith is Scary

James 1:6

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

There is a reason God says to ask in faith, nothing wavering. The reason He says this is because faith is scary because you are stepping out on something you have never done before. Faith is stepping out on the unknown and trusting that God will be there to get you through. God knows that faith is scary, but He also knows His character to be there when you step out by faith. This is why He tells us not to waver when we ask in faith. There are several steps you will work through to get past the wavering.

First, God tells you to do something by faith. The fact that God tells you to do something by faith should take the wavering out of your mind, but sadly, because it is a faith command, it is still scary because you have never been where God is telling you to go. When God tells you to do something by faith, if you look back at God’s character to be there for you in the past, you will realize that wavering is unnecessary mental energy being wasted that could be used in your work of faith.

Second, you get excited that God wants you to do something by faith. The initial reaction that God wants you to do something by faith is usually exciting because you have not had time to think about it. When God told me to go into full-time evangelism as a young man, my initial reaction was excitement. Excitement to do what God tells you to do by faith is normal. Faith’s command is exciting because it means God will use you beyond your capabilities.

Third, after excitement comes wavering. Why would you waver about faith’s command? You waver because you have had time to think about what you say you will do by faith, and you realize you are stepping out on the unknown. Satan is a master of whispering in your ear that you are a fool to step out by faith, but you are only a fool if you listen to him. Once you decide to step out by faith, and when you have had time to think about it, you begin to waver, wondering how you will make this happen. My friend, you don’t have to make it happen; you just have to obey and let God make it happen.

Fourth, when faced with wavering, you must make the choice to go backward and not attempt the faith act, or you step out by faith despite the worries you have. Your future depends on what you do at this moment. Many have missed the great works of God in their lives and ministries because they chose to go backward instead of stepping out by faith.

Fifth, you step out by faith and see God show up. Here is the key to seeing the miraculous. Make the choice to step out by faith, and the moment you step out is when God begins to show Himself strong in your life. This is the James 4:8 principle that God is trying to get you to follow. God says, Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. When you draw nigh by faith despite the wavering, you find out that God always steps toward you to show His power in your life.

God is saying to step beyond the wavering, and you will find He will always show up. Whatever you do, don't stop at the wavering step, but let wavering be the proof that God is about to do something great through you. Be a part of the few who let wavering be the catalyst to act by faith, and you will be part of the few who see God’s great works in your life and ministry.
