God’s Power is Not a Trophy Piece

Isaiah 61:1

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

We read the stories of great men of the past who had God’s power on their lives, and it motivates us to desire that same power on our own lives. However, most want God’s power as a trophy piece so they can put it in their spiritual trophy case to show how great they are. What you will find is that God’s power is not a possession that you can portray like a trophy to show your greatness, but it is a tool God gives to help you do His work that you cannot do by yourself.

The verse above shows the key to having God’s power. God says, the Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me: because… God is about to tell why He puts His power on an individual. God’s power is the result of a believer doing something. What is it that we are to do to get this power? You will notice that God anoints those with His power to preach good tidings unto the meek. There is no purpose for God to give you His power if you are unwilling to preach the Gospel to others. The Gospel is the good tidings that God is talking about. God empowers me with His power as I go to preach the good tidings of the Gospel. You will never know God’s power until you go.

Moreover, you will notice that God sends you to bind up the brokenhearted. Again, God’s power is on those who are going. God gives His power as you proclaim the liberty of Christ’s sacrificial payment to the lost. God empowers you as you show that Christ is the only One who can free the lost from the bondage of sin’s payment. God puts His power on the one who proclaims the acceptable year of the LORD, which is Christ paying for the sins of the world as Calvary.

You can beg for God’s power for hours, but there is no purpose in begging for it until you do what requires God’s power. You must get past the point where you believe God’s power is a possession to put in a trophy case. God has never empowered someone who was looking for His power to show their spirituality, but He has empowered thousands of people who needed that power to do His works.

Let me illustrate this truth by using electricity. There is no purpose for electricity if it is stored in an electrical box. Every building that has electricity has a breaker box where the power is distributed to different parts of the building. That electrical box is simply a conduit from the power source to the place where the power is needed. You are the electrical panel that has God’s power flowing through you as you do the work of God that requires His power.

Moreover, inside that electrical panel are several circuit breakers. The electricity flows through each breaker to a different source. So, the need for power is determined by how much power is being used from each breaker. My friend, how much of God’s power you have is determined by how much work you do for God that requires His power. Don’t let one area of your life have the availability of God’s power to be used, but you don't use it. Let your life be a light everywhere you go so that God’s power constantly flows through you. Let God’s power be the tool to empower you to do His great work by being the conduit that brings the Gospel to every person you see everywhere you go.
