Genesis 16:2
And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
Every person who has found themselves doing wrong is someone who listened to the wrong voice. Eve listened to the wrong voice by listening to the voice of the serpent, and she took of the forbidden fruit, resulting in her being separated from God. Adam listened to the wrong voice when he listened to his wife over God, resulting in sin entering into the world. Abram listened to the wrong voice by listening to his wife whose faith wavered, resulting in Ishmael being born and causing all the strife in the Middle East that will last until Jesus returns. Samson, Jacob, Amnon, and many others listened to the wrong voices to their hurt.
It is critical that you hearken to the right voices in your life. Those who establish the right voices in their lives and listen to them are those who keep themselves from heartache. I have found several voices I have listened to in my life that have led me to do right every time I hearkened to what they told me to do. Let me share these voices with you.
First, hearken to the voice of the Scriptures. The Scriptures will never lead you wrong. You can avoid much heartache in your life if you will read the Scriptures daily and hearken to what they tell you to do.
Second, hearken to the voice of the Holy Spirit. If you are saved, God has given you the Holy Spirit as a voice to tell you when you should or should not do something. The believer has no excuse for doing wrong; they have the Holy Spirit living within them who will guide them into all truth if they will listen.
Third, hearken to the right voices. There are many voices that will try to get you to do wrong, but you must only listen to the voices that push you to do right. To ignore the right voices in your life only leads to heartache. The right voices may not always tell you what you want to hear, but they will tell you the right thing, resulting in God’s blessings if you hearken to them.
Fourth, hearken to the faith voices. The voices that always challenge you to do something by faith will always lead you to the greatest blessings of God. You cannot please God without faith, and faith voices will challenge you to have the courage to step out and attempt something great for God by faith. Listen to the faith voices because they want you to know what it is like to have God do the miraculous through your life.
Fifth, hearken to the correcting voices. Don't get mad at those who correct you for doing wrong. The correcting voices in your life should not cause you to get angry, but they should cause you to correct what you are doing wrong so you can have God’s blessings on your life. The correcting voices in your life love you more because they are willing to risk their relationship with you to tell you to do the right thing. Listen to them, for they only want what is best for you.
Sixth, hearken to the voices of the old paths. History will tell you what to do if you will listen to it. The voices of those from the past have already lived their lives; listen to them and follow their advice, and you will find the voices of the old paths will show you how to be used by God greatly.
