Ephesians 5:8
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
When God commands the believer to walk, He is saying that we should live a certain way. As believers, we are to walk differently from those around us. We belong to God, and because we belong to Him, we are to live differently from the world. When you got saved, you were given a command by God to change the way you walked to a new way. In other words, it does not matter what your culture is; you are to change your carnal culture to live a spiritual culture that demands you to walk differently than what you used to walk. In the book of Ephesians, we find five ways a believer is to walk.
First, a believer is to walk in good works. Ephesians 2:10 says, For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Your life is to be about doing good works for God. You are Christ’s workmanship, which means He created you to do the good works of the Scriptures. Every work in the Scriptures that God commands us to do are the works we are to walk in. In other words, those works are to become our lives if we walk in good works.
Second, a believer is to walk worthy of their calling. Ephesians 4:1 says, I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, You are to live like you are called by God to give His Gospel to the lost world. No believer has a right to live the way they want to live, but they are to walk worthy of being called to give the Gospel.
Third, a believer is to walk in love. Ephesians 5:2 says, And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us… To walk in love means you live your life for others. The best way to love others is to live for them. This means you must sacrifice your life to live for others. If I am walking in love, I will give my life to help others.
Fourth, a believer is to walk as a child of light. Ephesians 5:8 says, For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: A child of light lives an open life at all times. The believer is not to live their life a certain way at home, and live a different life at their church; rather, the believer is to live their life the same way all the time. There should be no duplicity in the believer’s walk. The believer should walk as a child of light 24/365.
Fifth, a believer is to walk circumspectly. Ephesians 5:15 says, See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, The believer must always be careful how they live. The believer must always be on guard that they are to walk for Christ and never take a risk that they will never get caught doing wrong. The moment you think you will not get caught doing the wrong thing is when you stop walking circumspectly. The believer should live their life as if someone is always watching them, as if their life is always on display for the world to see.
The key to all of this is the word walk. To walk means to put one step forward. In other words, you may not be where you are supposed to be in these areas, but you should be going forward to where you are supposed to be in these areas every day. We will never be everything we are supposed to be as a believer, but we can get closer to being what we are supposed to be by walking in these areas.
