Potential’s Greatest Thief

Deuteronomy 3:26

But the LORD was wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.

Moses was one of the greatest men God used in the Scriptures, but because of sin, he did not reach God’s potential for his life. You will recall how Moses smote the rock instead of speaking to it, and this act is what kept him from being able to take the children of Israel into the Promised Land. In fact, Moses said that the Lord GOD had just begun to show His greatness and mighty hand. Moses said this after he saw the LORD bring him out of the wilderness to make him the leader of Israel. Moses said this after he saw God send the ten plagues on the Egyptians. Moses said this after he saw God part the Red Sea and allowed Israel to walk through the middle of the sea to the other side of safety, only to let the same path destroy the Egyptian army. Moses said this after he received the ten commandments on the top of Mount Sinai. He said this after seeing the plethora of miracles God did for Israel to bring them to the brink of Jordan before they were to cross over to take the Promised Land that had been promised to them. Moses was saying there was much more he could have done, but his sin robbed him of seeing his greatest potential.

Sin is always the greatest thief of potential. Many people whom God has used mightily could have seen God do more through their lives had they not allowed sin to rob them of their potential. I could write story after story of people that I have known in my life who chose to sin, only to see their potential wiped out.

My friend, God has a plan for your life that is far greater than you can ever imagine. We will never know the potential God sees in us until we step onto Heaven’s shores. God’s potential in our lives will only be seen by living for Him from the moment we are saved to the day of our death. Some people have seen God’s greatest works in their lives in the latter years of their lives. Therefore, we must realize God’s potential for our lives will never be realized until He takes us to Heaven.

Moreover, it is up to you to choose God’s plan to reach your greatest potential. God never forces His plan on your life, but you would be foolish not to surrender to His will because, in His will, you will find your life to accomplish the most for eternity. To question God’s will for your life and what He wants to do through you is to minimize the potential of what God can do through you if you will obey Him.

Furthermore, sin will rob you of your potential. Just like you have a choice to do God’s will, you also have a choice to sin or not to sin. When you choose to sin, you are throwing your potential away. Throwing away your potential for five minutes of physical pleasure is not worth it. Throwing your potential away for money and possessions only brings regret and keeps you from what you could have done. Many people look back and wonder what God could have done through them had they just followed Him. It does not matter how “great” your sin is; all sin robs you of God’s potential for your life.

Don't let sin rob you of seeing God’s greatness and mighty hand working in your life. Sin will never give you what it promises, and it can never provide the potential that God has planned for your life if you will serve Him until you die.
