Remember the Enemy

Allen Domelle

Deuteronomy 25:19

Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget it.

God specifically told Israel not to forget what Amalek did to them in the way. He told them to blot out their remembrance. God wanted Israel to remember how they came from behind as they journeyed toward the Promised Land in an attempt to completely destroy Israel. This was the battle when Moses went to the top of the hill and raised his hands to give encouragement to the troops as they fought. God’s command to remember what Amalek did was a command never to make peace with their enemy.

Too many believers are making peace with the enemy. We quickly forget what the enemy has done to our lives, and we make peace with them in hopes that our lives will be easier to live. You cannot make peace with the enemy without the enemy destroying your life. The enemy has no desire to make peace with you; all they desire is to destroy you and your testimony for Christ.

So, who is the enemy? The first enemy is Satan. Making peace with Satan is a spiritual death wish to your testimony and faith. Sadly, many believers have made peace with Satan by quitting. Many who have served God for years have quit serving God to live a life of ease, and what they don't know is that they have made peace with the enemy, Satan. Never sit down at the bargaining table with Satan because his promises are filled with lies, and his work will be to sift you as wheat. Satan has tried to destroy you before, and he will continue his attempt to destroy you until you are no longer a threat to his cause.

The second enemy is sin. Sin is not your friend. If you would stop long enough to remember what sin has done to you, you would quickly remember that sin has always caused hurt to your life. Sin’s work does not change because time has passed; sin’s work always leads to heartache and destruction. Have you forgotten what sin did to you before you got saved? Have you forgotten what sin did to you before you rededicated your life to God? Have you forgotten what sin did to you before you confessed your sin to God? Sin is always the enemy of the believer, and you must never forget how sin’s only work in your life has been to destroy you.

The third enemy is the flesh. There is nothing good in your flesh. Many have surrendered to the feelings of the flesh only to find that the end of living a life for the flesh is sin. So many times, I hear people tell me they feel something is the right thing to do. The flesh is always wrapped up in “me” and “I,” but surrendering to the flesh always pulls you away from God, doing right, and His blessings on your life.

My friend, we are in a great spiritual battle, and we must never forget who our enemy is. The best way to battle Satan, sin, and the flesh is to walk with God in His Word, in prayer, and by serving God daily. You will never regret not making peace with the enemy. Never forget the heartache that the enemy brings to the believer’s life. Look at those you are trying to help and always remember that you are not an exception to the enemy’s work. Stay close to God and continue doing right, and you will be victorious over the believer’s enemy.
