The Burden of Responsibility

Allen Domelle

Number 3:31

And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the hanging, and all the service thereof.

God talks about the charge of the Levites and the leaders of tribes several times in the book of Numbers. When God uses the word charge, He is talking about their responsibilities to do a task. Many people depended on those who had responsibilities so they could serve God the way they were commanded to serve Him. Not only did others outside the temple depend on these to keep their charge, but those inside the temple, who also had a responsibility, depended on each other to keep their charge.

Responsibilities are a part of life. If you are a parent, you have a responsibility to keep the charge of your home and children. In the church, there are many people who have responsibilities that they must be careful to do their charge so the work can be done right. In the secular world, whether it be a business person or an employee, many are given responsibilities to do, and it is incumbent upon them to keep their charge so that nothing is left undone. Whether or not we like it, everyone has responsibilities, and it is our duty to do these responsibilities with carefulness and effort. Let me share several thoughts about keeping the charge of our responsibilities.

First, with position comes responsibility. Everyone has some position, and you are to keep charge of your responsibilities whether or not you asked for them. For instance, a parent often did not ask for a child to be born, but because you are now a parent, you are given a charge to care for that child properly throughout their young life until they become an adult. Whatever your position is, you have a responsibility to those depending on you to care for and to do your best with every duty of your position.

Second, you have a duty to your responsibility. To keep charge means you will be there. There is no valid excuse except your poor character for not showing up when you have a responsibility. People depend on you being there, and nothing should keep you from it other than sickness. Oversleeping, not feeling like doing it, or wanting to do something else is no excuse for not doing the duties of your responsibility. You have a responsibility; do it.

Third, the purpose of your responsibility is to serve. Numbers 4:24 shows the purpose of having a charge is to serve. You are not given responsibility for others to serve you, but you are given it to serve others. When you realize position has given you a responsibility to serve others is when you find the true purpose for what God has for your life.

Fourth, responsibility always involves pressure. God also says in Numbers 4:24 that our charge has burdens. In other words, the burdens are the pressure that comes with responsibility. Life, in general, has pressure, but to run from your responsibility because of the pressure is to be negligent of your duties. Pressure is part of leadership, but if God gave you the position, He also gave you the wherewithal to handle the pressures that come with it.

Fifth, responsibilities will go undone if you don’t execute your responsibilities. Many depend on you to do your job; don't be AWOL in your duties, for livelihoods, lives, and eternity depend on you executing your duties dutifully.
