Genesis 24:27
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master's brethren.
The servant of Abraham was given a great task to find a wife for Isaac. On the way to finding a wife, he prayed that God would lead him to the very lady that Isaac was to marry. It so happened that the very first lady that this servant came in contact with was the very one who was to be Isaac’s wife.
The servant made an astute statement about why he found God’s leading. He said, I being in the way, the LORD led me. In other words, if this servant was not in the way, the LORD would not have led him. Notice, he did not say that the LORD led him because of his feelings. He did not say that the LORD led him because everything fell into place. He said that he was in the way and the LORD led him.
Too many believers are trying to base the LORD’s leading on circumstances more than in doing what is right. We hear people say, “I feel this is the right thing to do.” Basing the LORD’s leading on what you feel is right is dangerous. The LORD’s leading is much more than a feeling; it is doing what is the right thing to do. Let me share several principles about the LORD’s leading that will help you to discern whether or not the LORD is truly leading you.
First, the LORD cannot lead someone who is not following. You cannot tell me that the LORD has spoken to you when you are not following what He has already told you to do in His Word. The LORD cannot lead someone who is not following His command to be faithful to church. The LORD cannot lead someone who is living a life of sin. The LORD cannot lead someone who does not read God’s Word and pray daily. God leads the believer who is following Him in doing right. If you want the LORD to lead you in your life, you would be wise to start following Him instead of following your own fleshly desires of life.
Second, the LORD’s leading has nothing to do with your ego being hurt. Many believers have said the LORD is leading them to leave a church after the Pastor’s message or counsel shined a light on their disobedience. Just because your ego has been hurt does not mean that the LORD is leading you. What is leading you in these times is your ego. Your ego will always lead you down the wrong path because it is concerned with how you want people to perceive you instead of how God perceives you. Never allow your hurt ego to direct you, because your ego will always lead you in the wrong way.
Third, the LORD leads those who are busy in the right way. God’s leading amazingly finds those who are busy doing the right thing. However, God’s leading is nowhere to be found to the one sitting and doing nothing. It is not that God speaks audibly to those who are busy in the way, but He will make sure that the right way for their life will find them. God’s leading is more about the right way finding you than you trying to find the right way. Get busy serving the LORD, and the LORD will lead the right way to find you.
Fourth, being in the right way is being in the Bible way. The LORD cannot lead those who have compromised; therefore, it is wise to stick with the old paths if you desire the LORD to lead you in your life.
