Turning a Curse Into a Blessing

Deuteronomy 23:5

Nevertheless the LORD thy God would not hearken unto Balaam; but the LORD thy God turned the curse into a blessing unto thee, because the LORD thy God loved thee.

Balaam’s intent was to curse God’s people. However, the LORD stepped in and turned that curse into a blessing. It was not that Balaam was a spiritual person that turned the curse into a blessing, but it was the LORD’s power to be able to step in to turn a curse into a blessing.

Many find a curse in their lives that could destroy them if they allow it. A curse is an affliction, a cross to bear, a trial, or a bitter problem that we face. Everyone faces a curse at some point in their lives. Now, we can let that curse become an epitaph to our walk with God, or we can turn that curse into a blessing. There are several things you must do when the curse comes into your life so that you can turn the curse into a blessing.

First, remember that the LORD thy God still loves you. Just because your life is facing a curse does not mean that God does not love you. Too many think that God does not love them because of the difficulties their life has encountered. God’s love is not based on how good life is going for you; His love is based on His character, which means He loves you despite what life has brought against you. Never doubt the love of God. It is God’s love that often helps you to stay mentally strong. It is God’s love that gives you hope that you can make it. Satan would certainly want you to think that God does not love you because he wants to take your hope and confidence away. Whenever the curse comes to your life, never doubt that God still loves you.

Second, you must continue to do right if you are to turn your curse into a blessing. One reason God stepped in at the time that Balaam was going to curse Israel was because Israel was doing right at the time. Righteous living always brings God’s favor and protection to one’s life. It does not mean you won't face difficulties, but it does mean that you will find God’s protection despite the difficulties that are there to hurt you. The worst thing to do when the curse comes on your life is to stop doing right. To stop doing right is to stop doing what is needed to turn the curse into a blessing. Many will say they will start doing right when they get their life situations turned around, but they don't understand that they are making their life situations worse. Don't stop doing right when hardships occur in life. The best way to deal with hardships is to continue doing right; by doing so, you show Satan that the curse is not a weapon he can use against you again to cause you to stop.

Third, to turn the curse into a blessing, you must pray. Only God has the power to turn a curse into a blessing. Never rely on your own power to turn a curse into a blessing, but spend much time in prayer asking God to give you grace for your spirit, strength of mind, and His mercy to step in to turn the curse into a blessing.

Fourth, take the curse and make it a blessing. Instead of allowing the curse to be a curse, take it and use it to help others who are facing the same curse. God never allows anything in your life that cannot be a tool you can use to help others. Therefore, any curse that has come into your life can be a blessing if you decide not to allow it to be a curse. Every curse can be a tool you use to further the cause of Christ, but you must have the mindset to turn it into a tool so that it becomes a blessing, not only to you, but also to others.
