Viewing Sin as Exceeding Sinful

Allen Domelle

Romans 7:13

Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

One reason so many don't care about their sin is because they don't see their sin as exceeding sinful as God sees it. The phrase exceeding sinful is talking about sin being disgusting and distasteful. As long as your sin is not disgusting or distasteful to you, you will continue to fall to its grip. The alcoholic will continue to fall to alcohol until they see it as exceeding sinful. The adulterer will continue in their adultery until they see it as exceeding sinful. The sinner will continue to fall to their sin until they see it as exceeding sinful. When the distaste and disgust of your sin becomes greater than the pleasure of it is when you will find victory over it. Let me share several things you must do to see sin as exceeding sinful.

First, you must admit that what you are doing is sin. Your wrong is not a phobia or a syndrome; it is a sin. Nobody has ever overcome sin who didn't see their sin as sin. Sin is not a weakness; it is a sin. Sin is not a bad gene in your body; it is a sin of choice. You can continue to let sin destroy your life by giving different names to it, or you can admit that what you are doing is sin.

Second, you must not categorize sin as bad or worse. One reason many never overcome sin is because they look at sin as not bad, bad, or really bad sin. There is no category of sin with God. All sin is sin, and all sin is exceeding sinful in God’s eyes. You will never overcome your sin until you look at sin as exceeding sinful. You will see sin as exceeding sinful when you stop comparing your sin to others and instead compare it to God’s righteousness.

Third, you must look at your sin through God’s eyes. Look at how your sin hurts God. Look at how Christ died to give you victory over sin and how much it hurts Him to see you do something that will bring harm, destruction, and regret to your life. You would stop your sin if you could see how much it hurts God. If you love God exceedingly, you will stop your sin because you will see how it hurts Him deeply to see you do that which is against His Word.

Fourth, see what it has done to those you love. Sin has never done anything but hurt those you love. You will see sin as exceeding sinful when you see how it has hurt those you love the most. It is not hard to have a great disgust for sin when you see how it has destroyed the lives of those you love and hurt the lives around those who have sinned.

Fifth, read God’s Word and pray. God’s Word will keep you from sin, but prayer will give you the power over it. Prayer gives you power over sin because you are drawing closer to God as you pray. The closer you get to God, the more you will hate sin. Righteousness hates sin; therefore, you will see your sin as exceeding sinful if you continue to draw closer to God through reading His Word and praying.

Sixth, invest your life in others. The more you invest your life in others, the more you will hate sin because of what it does to your investment. It is not hard to see sin as exceeding sinful when you see what sin has done to those you have invested your life in. Get involved in serving God by investing your life in others, and sin will become exceeding sinful as you see what sin has done to those you are helping.
