Where True Fulfillment In Life Is Found

Allen Domelle

John 4:34

Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

Jesus sent His disciples away to buy food so they could eat, but while they were gone, He met the woman of Samaria at the well and was able to give her the Gospel. His disciples came and saw Jesus talking with this woman to their amazement. After this lady left, the disciples asked Jesus to eat because they knew He had gone without food for a while. However, Jesus’ response to the disciples was that His meat was to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. What these disciples did not understand was that Jesus was teaching them where true fulfillment in life is found.

Many try to find fulfillment in life in all the wrong places. They try to find fulfillment in sports, money, possessions, investments, drugs, alcohol, and immoral relationships just to name a few places. However, fulfillment in life will never be found in anything the world has to offer. For thousands of years, people have tried to find fulfillment in life through the world, only to find the world leaves them empty and seeking for something else to find true fulfillment. Let me share a few thoughts from this verse that will help you to find true fulfillment in your life.

First, fulfillment in life is not just a possibility, but a promise from God. The word meat in this verse is talking about fulfillment or joy. Jesus said, My meat. Imagine the Creator of the world saying He found fulfillment. The disciples tried to give him food, but Jesus understood that food may satisfy for the moment, but the flesh will get hungry again. Jesus showed that you can find true fulfillment in your life.

Second, fulfillment is found in the will of God. Jesus said His meat was to do the will of him that sent me. God has placed you on this earth for a specific purpose, and you will never be happy or find true joy without doing what God created you to do. I often hear people talk about they feel like themselves when they are doing what they want, but they never understand until they have wasted their life that what they thought was the “true them” was a temporary fix that left them empty.

You will only find true fulfillment in life by doing the will of God for your life. There are two wills that God has for your life. There is the revealed will of God and the personal will of God for your life. God’s revealed will is what He commands you to do in the Scriptures. God’s personal will is the purpose for which He placed you on this earth to do. In other words, true fulfillment is found in obeying God’s Word. You must do God’s revealed will before you ever find God’s personal will for your life. When you get busy doing God’s revealed will is when God will show you what His personal will is for your life. Don't worry about the personal will for your life because that is a natural byproduct of doing God’s revealed will. You will never find true fulfillment in life until you do God’s revealed and personal will for your life.

Third, true fulfillment comes from finishing the work that God sent you to do. In other words, do God’s revealed and personal will for your life, and you will find true fulfillment in your life. To start and quit what God’s will is for your life will leave you empty and wishing you would have finished what you started. My friend, you can search every pleasure in life to find true fulfillment, but it is only found in being who God made you to be, which is done by doing the purpose for which He created you to do in this life.
