Zealous for God's Sake

Numbers 25:11

Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

Israel may have been destroyed had it not been for one man being zealous for God’s sake. Israel had compromised with Moab in marrying and worshipping with them, and God sent a plague on them to destroy them for this great sin. Phinehas loved His God and country, and he did not want to see the people consumed by God’s judgment. His zeal to kill a man who flaunted his sin in front of everyone is what caused God to stay His judgment on Israel.

If there is ever a time that we need God’s people to be zealous for His sake, it is now. We live in times when sin is promoted as good and good is promoted as evil. We live in times when churches are look more like country clubs and bar scenes than like churches. We live in times when people doubt God’s ability to do the miraculous, but are willing to attempt worldly feats. Oh, my friend, these are days when we need someone to be zealous for God’s sake.

It is sad that when one is zealous for God’s sake that they are considered crazy, but people can be zealous for a sports team and everyone says they are a great fan. It is sad that abominable people can flaunt their sin on the streets of our country, but those who believe that men should only love women and women should only love men are considered homophobes. If believing that sodomy is an abomination to God makes me a homophobe, then I happily embrace this tag. Yes, we need people who are zealous for God when believers criticize those who go soul winning, but champion those who attack the King James Bible. How we need someone to be zealous for God to save our country! However, what does it mean to be zealous for God?

First, it means to be passionate about what you are doing for God. Why is it that we are more intense about politics than we are about building churches, winning souls, and building lives? It is no wonder we are losing our country when God’s people are more passionate about who controls the political spectrum than they are about people going to Hell. You ought to be passionate about fighting sin. You ought to be passionate about the preaching of the Word of God. We will never save our country from destruction with people who are apathetic about God’s work.

Second, to be zealous for God means you are committed to the cause of Christ. Oh, how we need people to be so committed that they won’t miss church, be faithful to their ministry obligations, and be committed to seeing souls saved. Committed people are not hit-and-miss with what they do, but they will do what they are supposed to do with every ounce of energy. We will never save our nation without believers who are committed to the cause of Christ.

Third, to be zealous for God means you are earnest about the cause of Christ. What we are doing for God is not a game; it is a cause. You are not zealous for God when you are trying to find ways out of serving God instead of looking for a way to do something for God.

Fourth, to be zealous for God means you don't care if anyone joins you; you will do what needs to be done to save your country. Stop looking for others to join you. Jump in all the way and something to save your nation.
