“For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.”
Many times throughout the Scriptures, you will find that profitability of preaching. It is through preaching where the power of God is displayed, believers are stablished in the Word, and the Gospel is made clear to the lost. Preaching can be a life-changing event. The verse above shows that preaching didn’t profit these people, but it can profit if you are properly prepared to listen to it. Let me share with you nine ways to make preaching profitable to your life.
First, if preaching is going to be profitable, you must listen. You must be careful that you don’t let other things distract you from the preaching. When you go to church, sit in places where there are no distractions. Moreover, don’t be a distraction to others. If you remove the distractions, preaching can be profitable to your life.
Second, you must listen to the Word if preaching is going to be profitable. Let God’s Word change your life. When you hear the Scriptures read, listen to them. It is God’s Word that changes your life. Preaching helps to explain God’s Word, but you mustn’t be flippant about the reading of God’s Word.
Third, you must listen with faith if preaching is going to be profitable. Listen to preaching with the anticipation to have your faith challenged. Preaching is the match that lights the fire of faith if you will let the Holy Spirit challenge you through preaching.
Fourth, you must listen expecting to receive if preaching is going to be profitable. You never get anything from preaching if you don’t expect to get something. Always approach the hearing of preaching with an expectant heart for God to speak, and you will receive something that will help.
Fifth, you must listen believing if preaching is going to be profitable. Don’t let unbelief in the preaching cause you to miss the truth that can challenge your faith. Don’t listen to preaching to find what is wrong with the sermon, but listen with a believing heart that God has something for you to hear.
Sixth, you must listen with an open heart if preaching is going to be profitable. Never approach preaching with a hardened heart. Always approach it with an open heart for God to speak to you. You are sure to get nothing from the preaching if you have closed your heart to it.
Seventh, you must listen with a desire to change if preaching is going to be profitable. God’s Word can change the innermost of your life if you have a desire to do right. God uses the preaching of His Word to pierce those areas of your life that nothing else can change. Be desirous to change, and preaching will become a life-changing event.
Eighth, you must listen with an honest heart if preaching is going to be profitable. Don’t listen to a sermon thinking it is for someone else, but listen knowing that God has something for you.
Ninth, you must listen to preaching prayerfully if preaching is going to be profitable. Always precede listening to every sermon with prayer asking God to speak to you, and you will find the sermon will have something for you.
