2 Chronicles 23:4
“This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you entering on the sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be porters of the doors;”
Inside of your house where you presently live is a king. I am talking about that child whom you call your own child. God is the One who gave you that child, and He has given you that child for the purpose to raise for Him. You will never know what will become of that child, but you can be sure that they will be something great for God if they are protected from the things that would pull them away from God’s purpose in their life. Your child could be the next great preacher, missionary, or evangelist. They might be the next great Sunday school teacher or Christian school teacher who will train the next great preacher for a generation. Needless to say, you have a great responsibility in protecting your child from the things that would keep them from being the king of God’s will for their life.
Jehoiada understood this great responsibility when it came to raising Joash to be the next king of Judah. Because he understood that the enemy would do everything they could to kill this young boy, he placed guards at the doors of the house, the gates of the city, and inside the house just in case anyone got by the other two levels of guards. Just as Jehoiada put guards around this child, you must have guards around your children if they are going to be the king of God’s will for their lives. Let me share some areas you must guard your children as a parent.
First, you must guard your home. Everything that goes on inside your home needs to be spiritual. Doing wrong is not okay just because you are behind the closed doors of your house where nobody can see what you are doing. Your children are learning from you, and you must be careful not to teach them something in private that would hinder them from becoming the king of God’s will for their life.
Second, you must guard their church life. Your children need to be in church every time the church doors are open. This means that you must be in church every time the church doors are open. Moreover, you better be sure that you are not in a church that would expose your children to the world. Just because a place of worship has “church” on the sign does not make it a good place to go. You better make sure that the place where you take your children to church is a place that will challenge them to do God’s work.
Third, you must guard the influences of your children. Digital media has a great influence on your children, and it would be best not to let your children be exposed to them. I know this won’t make you popular with your children, but it will sure keep them from being exposed to something that would influence their heart not to want to do what God wants them to do with their life.
Fourth, you must guard the associations of your children. The friends your children have will often influence their heart towards God. Guard who you allow to be your child’s friend, and you will guard them against the wrong influence. It only takes one bad friend for your child not to serve the LORD. This also means that you must have the right friends. Those you are friends with will have children who will become friends with your children. If you have the right type of friends, your children will be protected from people who could influence your children for wrong.
