“For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.”
The greatest asset that the believer has is their spirit. Your spirit is constantly under attack. Satan knows that if he can defeat your spirit that he can defeat you. Your spirit is under attack from several different areas. Negative people are an attack against your spirit. The world’s medium of information attacks your spirit on a continual basis throughout the day. Satan attacks your spirit through others attacking you or through your own perceived failures. Sadly, we attack our own spirit by allowing sin into our lives. If you are going to live your life on topside so that you can be a greater help to others, you are going to have to protect your spirit from the onslaught of spirit-attackers. Let me share several things that I do to protect my spirit that you can do to protect yours.
First, I don’t listen to negative. Negative information comes through many sources. When people come to me with negative information, I immediately try to change the conversation so that their negativity doesn’t damper my spirit. Moreover, I don’t feed on the failures of others. I am not interested in another’s spiritual fall. I don’t mean this in a way that I am not concerned with the person, but I am not concerned with what they have done. It won’t help me, and it won’t build my spirit.
Second, don’t focus on that which you cannot change. Why give your energies to that which you cannot change? For instance, I limit my intake of political happenings because most political happenings are negative by nature, and I can’t control what a politician does. Likewise, I don’t focus on what other ministries or people outside of my church are doing. This may sound cold, but they have not asked for my help, so why damage my spirit by feeding on things that I cannot change. You will damage your spirit by constantly feeding yourself troubling information about things you cannot change.
Third, I don’t spend time with negative people. I limit my time to short conversations with negative people so that their negativity doesn’t rub off on me. Limit and control your conversations with the negative people in your life so that they don’t damage your spirit.
Fourth, I control my sources of information. Be careful about feeding on the news and social media because they feed on negative and complaining. You can’t have a good spirit by feeding your spirit negative and complaining information from the news and social media feeds. Moreover, don’t allow yourself to feed on conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories are just that, theories. Limit and control your intake to these sources so you can protect your spirit.
Fifth, I do actions that build my spirit. Reading God’s Word will do more to build your spirit than knowing all the negative that the news and social media feed. Spend more time in God’s Word, and you will find it easier to keeping a good spirit. Moreover, I also go soul winning because soul winning will build my spirit. Watching others get saved always lifts your spirit. If you get away from the negative feeders that defeat your spirit and start reading God’s Word and reaching the lost for Christ, you will find that you will be able to build your spirit and stay on topside daily.
