Regarding Iniquity

post-title

Psalm 66:18 “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:”

Everyone wants God to hear their prayers. There will come a time when you are going to need God to hear your prayers because of an emergency. We don't know when that day will come; therefore, we must always keep our life in such a manner that our line of communication is not hindered when we need Him.

The verse above is the key to knowing that God will hear you in your time of need. God says, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:” There are several things God is NOT saying in this verse that will help you to understand what He is saying.

First, God is not saying that He is the key to hearing your requests. You are the key to the Lord hearing your prayers. God has already promised in His Word that He would hear you, so the only reason God doesn't hear you is because you have allowed something to interfere with your communication lines to God.

Second, God is not saying that if you have sin in your life that He will not hear you. If this were the case, God would never hear our prayers because we are sinners and will always deal with sin. God said that if we “regard iniquity” that He would not hear us. It is not that you have sin in your life that keeps God from hearing you; it is that you have sin and do nothing about it.

Third, God is not saying that if you have sin in your heart that He will not hear you. You should constantly be trying to remove sin from their heart, but it is the regarding of sin in your heart that blocks the ability for God to hear your prayers.

Fourth, God is not saying that He will not hear the sinner. If this were the case, the lost sinner could not be saved. If this were the case, God would never hear the believer because we are constantly fighting sin. 1 John 1:8 confirms this when it says, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” The fact that God is willing to hear a sinner should encourage you to pray.

So, what is God saying in this verse? God is saying that if you “regard” iniquity in your heart that He will not hear you. The word “regard” means to esteem, respect, admire, give best wishes to, give it place, or love it. In other words, God is saying that when you refuse to deal with your sin because you want to continue it, it is that action that keeps God from hearing your prayer.

Let me ask you, have you allowed your sin to become a treasure in your life? Does your sin bother you anymore? You are living a dangerous life when you will deal with everything else in your life but the one sin that the Holy Spirit has spoken to you about. My friend, sin is not a house pet that you play or cuddle with, but a venomous poison that destroys your ability to have your prayers heard. There will come a day when you will need God to hear your prayer, and that may be today. It would be sad that you have so damaged your line of communication with sin by regarding it in your heart that the prayer of emergency is not heard. The good news is that you can clear that line up immediately by getting rid of that sin. Always remember that anything you regard in your heart but God is taking a place where God wants to be, and this is why it hurts your ability to have your prayer heard.
