Replacing Omnipotence

1 Kings 9:9 “And they shall answer, Because they forsook the LORD their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all this evil.”

As Solomon dedicated the temple that the LORD helped him build, he asked God to let this temple be the place where His people could come to get right with him. The LORD’s response to this dedicatory prayer was that He would bless His people as long as they followed Him. However, if they forsook the LORD for other gods, He would cut off Israel and destroy the temple. The LORD said that He would have it destroyed in such a manner that people would ask, “Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and to this house?” The answer to this question would be because “they forsook the LORD their God…and have taken hold upon other gods,…therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all this evil.”

The keyword to this verse is “forsook.” To forsake something is a purposeful act. It means to abandon them, to leave them, or to quit on them. It is hard to imagine that anyone would forsake Omnipotence for something that has done nothing for them. It was the LORD who delivered Israel from Egypt and guided them through the wilderness to the Promised Land, and yet they forsook him for something that is dead and could do nothing for them.

As foolish as this act may seem by Israel, there are many believers who have made the same choice to forsake Omnipotence for gods that they have replaced Him with. Imagine telling God to step down from His throne to replace Him with a god of your own that can do nothing for you; this would be a foolish and detrimental decision. However, many believers have pushed God off the throne of their heart to their own hurt for the gods of family, pleasures, and wealth. My friend, anything that becomes of more importance to you than God is a god.

Sadly, many have replaced God with family. I believe in the family, and I believe that we should give time to our family, but I should not quit on God to have family time. When my family time replaces the time that I should be serving the LORD, my family has then become my god over the Omnipotent God. Many have caused harm to their own family because they made their family their god over Jehovah God. God doesn't take kindly to be replaced by anyone.

Many have replaced Omnipotence with a career. Nothing wrong with building a business or trying to have a successful career, but when your career becomes more important than serving God, your career has become your god. When you don't go soul winning because it interferes with your career, then your career has become your god.

Likewise, many have replaced Omnipotence with pleasures and entertainment. There is nothing wrong with enjoying pleasures in life, but when pleasure takes the place of God, you have then set your pleasures on the throne of your life and made it a god.

If you want God’s blessings on your life and on the things you do, you MUST keep Him first in your life. Anything that replaces God’s rightful place in your life is in danger of being destroyed because God will let nothing, no matter how dear it is to you, replace His rightful place in your life.
