1 Peter 5:8-9
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.”
Understanding that Satan is your adversary and not your friend is the primary understanding that every believer must have in order to resist him. Too many believers say that Satan is their adversary, but they certainly don’t live like it. There is nothing that Satan does that will favor the believer. You must always realize that, as your adversary, he will do everything he can to devour your testimony for Christ. This is the reason that you must resist him with your whole effort. There are several things you must do to resist Satan.
First, you must get serious about the fact that you are in a battle with Satan. You can’t be passive in resisting Satan and expect that he will run. God says to “be sober.” You will never succeed in winning the battle against Satan until you get serious about the fact that you are in a spiritual battle.
Second, get busy in serving God. God tells the believer to “be vigilant.” The best way to fight and resist Satan is to serve God. You cannot lose in the battle with Satan as long as you are serving God. The only time a believer succumbs to Satan’s attacks is when they stop serving God, even if it is just for a moment.
Third, get settled in your faith. God tells the believer to be “stedfast in the faith.” In other words, get it settled about what you believe. Never negotiate your faith with anyone. What you believe should be settled. When you settle what you believe, you will never again have to look at what you believe to figure out if it is right. One thing Satan commonly does is that he gets the believer to question what they believe; thus, they take a look again through the prism of question instead of through the focus that it is settled. Get it settled what you believe and never negotiate it again.
Fourth, submit to God. James 4:7-8 teaches that submitting to God is how you resist the Devil. Too many people try to resist Satan by saying they are against Him when the way to resist Him is just to do whatever God tells you to do. When you accept and do what God tells you to do is when Satan flees. There may be times when you don’t want to do what God tells you to do, but submitting to Him is surrendering to God’s will in spite of how you feel about it.
Fifth, draw nigh to God. You cannot resist Satan if you are not drawing nigh to God in prayer and through studying the Scriptures. You must have a personal walk with God if you are going to overcome Satan. Any person who tries to serve God without a walk with God in the Scriptures and prayer will succumb to Satan attacks. You only draw nigh to God by walking with Him.
Sixth, be right with others. You cannot overcome Satan if you have dirty hands with others. Having a clear conscience with others is imperative in resisting Satan and his tactics.
Seventh, be right with your focus. A double-minded believer always fails to resist Satan. My friend, turning your back on the world to focus solely on God is the best way to keep your focus on God. When you focus on God is when Satan has no way to lure you with the world; thus, you will succeed in resisting Satan.
