Secrets of the Heart
Psalm 44:21
“Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.”
“Will you promise not to tell anyone if I tell you a secret?” How many times have you heard that line? Everyone loves to hear a secret, but nobody likes it when a secret is revealed. The reason nobody likes a secret to be revealed is because the secret is either embarrassing or wrong. The reason a revealed secret is embarrassing is because it reveals a hidden part of your heart to others, which is something most people don’t want others to see.
The Psalm above is a complaint to God about the suffering of His people. One of the things revealed in this psalm is how Israel thought they could do wrong secretly; however, the verse above reveals that “he knoweth the secrets of the heart.” You may be able to fool others around you, but God knows what is going on in your heart whether it is good or bad. Several thoughts should be considered concerning the secrets of the heart.
First, secrets are deceptive at the core. One reason we want to keep something secret is because we don’t want others to find out what we are thinking or doing. If what you are doing is right, why must it be kept a secret? I have always said that at the core of every marital or relationship problem is deceit. If the secret you are keeping from your spouse is so right, why must it be kept a secret? Why would you not want your spouse to know what you are doing? Likewise, the things you are keeping secret from your parents, authorities or others are only showing the deceit of your heart. The only reason you would not want others to know what is going on in your heart or what you are doing in secret is because you know that others would not be pleased with what they find out.
Second, your secret is already known by someone. Ecclesiastes 10:20 says, “Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.” All it takes for your secret to no longer be a secret is for you to tell one person or for another person to see what you are doing. My friend, what you are keeping secret is going to come out, and that is why you must stop doing what is wrong.
Third, secrets are not really secrets, because a secret must be kept a secret with someone else. Rarely will you ever keep a secret by yourself. Most likely, someone else is involved with your secret. Herein lies the problem. You are a servant to the person who knows your secret because the threat of the secret being revealed will force you to do what they want you to do. Christian, you are only to be a servant of Jesus Christ. You cannot live in freedom as long as another person already knows your secret because you are at their mercy of not telling anyone.
Fourth, God already knows your secret. The one person you have not taken into account about your secret is God. The best thing to do is to stop living the secretive life because the LORD will one day reveal it. The question you must ask yourself is this, is there something you are doing right now that you would not want anyone else to know? My friend, whatever you are trying to keep from others is already known. Don’t live with the assumption that it will never be found out because secrets are always exposed.
