“Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God.”
You will never be successful in anything that you do until you can answer the who, what, when, where, and why questions. These questions must be answered if you are going to serve the LORD successfully for your whole life. For who are you serving? What is the purpose of you serving? When are you going to serve? Where are you supposed to serve? Finally, why are you willing to do everything that you are doing? These questions must be answered if you are going to continue serving the LORD without disruption.
The verse above, and the following verse has the answer to these questions. God commands the believer to “sanctify” themselves. The word “sanctify” means to be set apart. God knows that you will never serve Him successfully until you are willing to set yourself apart for His service. There are three reasons a person should be set apart.
First, set yourself apart for a purpose. The purpose of being set apart is so that you can be holy. You will never have an influence for Christ with a soiled and worldly life. Holiness will only be achieved when the believer sets themselves apart from those things that could soil or hinder their ability to serve the LORD. Why would the believer set themselves apart from things that the world enjoys? The reason is for the purpose of being holy so that they can please the LORD and be a better tool for Him to use. The best tool God has to use is the person who is willing to set themselves apart from anything that would hinder them from being the tool God wants them to be.
Second, set yourself apart for a person. You should set yourself apart for the “LORD your God.” If you separate yourself from the world to please humanity, you will soon be disenchanted with what you find out about them. However, if you set yourself apart so that you can get closer to God, you will find what you separate from will cause no regrets because of Who you have the opportunity to get closer to. You will never be displeased with God the closer you get to Him because the closer you get to Him the sweeter He becomes. The closer you get to people, the more you will discover their weaknesses, but the closer you get to God the more you will discover His strength’s. The reason you must set yourself apart is so that you can get closer to God.
Third, set yourself apart for the profession of the ministry. God wants the believer to obey the commandments He gives to them. You will never find success in your Christian walk until you are willing to set yourself apart from those things that keep you from serving the LORD. My friend, there are many things you can do that wouldn’t be wrong, but do they keep you from your ability to serve the LORD. You must set yourself apart from anything that would keep you from serving the LORD in the manner that He would want you to serve Him.
The result of setting yourself apart in these three areas is so that the LORD will set you apart. Verse 8 says, “I am the LORD which sanctify you.” When the LORD sets you apart, it will make you different from the rest. The LORD set apart Elijah, and it made him different from the other prophets of His day. You must set yourself apart for the LORD if you want the LORD to use you like He doesn’t use anyone else. Remember that when the LORD sets you apart that He does it so that He can use you to bring greater glory to Him.
