“And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:”
Doing right always brings God’s blessings. God didn’t say when His blessings would come, but He just promised that He would bless you if you “hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God.” Just as doing wrong has its consequences, so doing right has its blessings. The difference between doing right and wrong is that doing right rewards you in the long run, but doing wrong only brings satisfaction at the beginning, but heartache at the end.
However, God told Israel that if they did right that He would set them “on high.” What God meant by this statement is that He would make Israel the model nation. God was saying that all the nations would look to Israel if they continued doing right.
Being set on high brings its responsibilities with it. Whether it is a church that becomes a model church, or a pastor whom God has blessed his ministry, or a believer who seems to be a spiritual leader among the saved, God will at times choose to bless these if they do right. Let me point out several cautions about being set on high.
First, always remember that you are blessed. Never forget that you were set on high, not because of yourself, but because the LORD thy God set thee on high. Whatever blessings you have received of God to be a spiritual leader were not because you were someone special, but because God chose to bless you by setting you on high. God will quickly take His blessings from you if you choose to take the credit for what has happened in your life instead of giving all the credit to God.
Second, you are being watched when you are set on high. People are watching everything that you do, and you have a responsibility to live above the standards by which others would live. People will watch your every move, and they will see the good and the bad that you do when you are set on high. You had better live your life above reproach because others will see it.
Third, you have a responsibility to those under you when you are set on high. The reason God set you on high is not to keep the blessings for yourself, but to be a help to those who follow you. Never use the blessing of position to cause others to serve you, but use your blessing of position to serve and help others in their needs. The greatest purpose of your being set on high is to help others do right. Don’t get self-focused and forget that you have a responsibility to help and lead others.
Fourth, you will be attacked when you are set on high. With great position comes great attacks. You won’t always be liked when God blesses you; therefore, you must stop trying to please everyone and just continue to please God by doing right.
Fifth, be an example when you are set on high. Don’t stop doing what brought you God’s blessings, but continue doing what brought them and He will keep you set on high. Keep in mind that God will set another person on high if you stop doing what caused Him to set you on high in the first place.
