Sit Still

Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Once a year, I go to the doctor for a physical just to be sure that everything is well with my health. Part of the physical is getting blood-work done which reveals several things about my health. When I’m sitting in the chair, the phlebotomist always tells me to sit very still so they can draw the blood needed to be checked. One reason they want me to sit still is because it is much easier to find the vein and get the needle into it without me moving. The second reason is because they don’t want to hurt me with the needle. Sitting still allows them to get the work done to help me stay healthy.

God says in the verse above, “Be still, and know that I am God…” God is telling the believer to sit still and stop moving. God wants to be exalted in your life, but He can’t be exalted when you are not allowing God to be God in your life. If you want to see God’s power in your life, you are going to have to learn to sit still and trust God. Let me share several observations with you about the importance of sitting still to let God be God.

First, God can’t be God as long as you are trying to help Him work things out for your situation. When troubles come your way, stop trying to help God work them out and sit still and let God be God. One of the hardest things to do is to take your hands off your situation and allow God to do His work. My friend, sit still in your troubles and let God be God. Many times God has to step back from helping you because He can’t do what He needs to do until you sit still and let Him be God. Go ahead and try working things out for yourself, but you are only hurting the situation. The only way God can do God-work in your life is to sit still, take your hands off your situation, and let God be God.

Second, sitting still means to turn off the noise in your life and let God be God. God can’t reveal Himself to you through His Word and prayer until you turn off the noise around you. There are times when you must turn off the noise of the world and get alone with God to pour out your problems to Him. There are times when you need to turn off the digital media and be still so that God can speak to you. There are times when you need to get away from all the voices that are trying to help you and be still and let God speak to you. You will never hear the still small voice of God as long as you allow the noise of meaningful people to go on in your life.

Third, sitting still shows God you trust Him. You may not understand everything God is doing in your life, but you need to be still and prove to God that you trust Him. One of the greatest things about not understanding God’s ways is that it makes you trust Him. You will never see the power of God working in your life and ministry until you sit still and trust God. Certainly, the temptation to be proactive and try to work things out for yourself is there, but you will never see God’s power and what He can do with your situation until you sit still and trust Him.

My friend, you will never know the power of God until you take your hands off everything and let Him be God. God will be exalted through you if you will learn to trust Him and be still. Ultimately, God being exalted in your life is what you should want, but that won’t happen until you learn to sit still and let God be God.
