1 Kings 14:2
“And Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I pray thee, and disguise thyself, that thou be not known to be the wife of Jeroboam; and get thee to Shiloh: behold, there is Ahijah the prophet, which told me that I should be king over this people.”
Jeroboam’s son fell sick, and the only hope of his healing was to go back to the man of God whom he had forsaken. He told his wife to go to the man of God “which told me that I should be king over this people.” My question for Jeroboam is this; why is it that you want the man of God now that your life is in shambles? If the golden calves and selfish lifestyle you chose to live are so great, why not go to them to get your answers? So you want the man of God now after your life has proven to be worthless?
Is it not amazing how this story is lived over and over again without people learning their lesson? Many believers who didn’t want anything to do with church or the man of God suddenly want the man of God to help them when their lifestyle has proven not to give them the answers for which they sought. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled that these believers are coming back to the LORD and want the help of a man of God, but why is it that you have to wait until tragedy hits your life before coming back to God? Why is it that you have to wait until your life is a wreck to seek help from a man of God? Many people have wasted several years of their lives because they let the “golden calves” they set up in their lives pull them away from a man of God or their church. Let me share with you several lessons you need to take from this situation in Jeroboam’s life.
First, the world’s lifestyles, preachers and promises never have the answers when tragedy hits. You had better learn now that the only thing the Devil’s worldly lifestyle gives you is tragedy and questions with no answers. Certainly, the world may seem to have all the answers, but when tragedy hits those who have lived in the world, they soon find out that the world never has the answers to help them. You had better learn now that no matter how promising the world’s offers may seem, they will leave you without answers wondering what could have been.
Second, God’s lifestyle may bring worldly inconvenience, but always remember that the answers and blessings it brings far outweighs your inconvenience. Many people have left church because it was inconvenient, but they found what they thought was inconvenient was really what they missed in life. Don’t wait until you miss the answers and blessings to enjoy the Christian life. Take full advantage of the blessings of serving God now. You will one day sit in regret wanting what you left if you choose to live the convenient lifestyle the world says it has.
Third, never let your pride keep you from coming back. Let me assure you that one day you will always want to come back to God, but the Devil will cause you to think that the preacher and the church want nothing to do with you. Don’t believe the Devil’s lie. Yes, you may have made a mess of your life, but God people will always bring you back with open arms. The great thing about God’s people who are spiritual is that they will always take you back no matter how low sin has taken you. Yes, one day you will want to live God’s way again, and when that day comes, ignore the voice that tells you that you will never be accepted again and come back to God.
