2 Samuel 21:16
“And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.”
When you think of David, you can’t help but think of him fighting Goliath. David’s life was one of fighting and defeating giants. David probably never thought when he faced Goliath that he would have to continue fighting this family until the day he died. Just like David fought five different giants in his life, so every believer will face these same giants in their life. Let me share with you the five giants you will and must fight in your Christian walk.
The first giant you must defeat is the giant of fear. Goliath was the first giant David faced. Goliath tried to instill fear in David’s life with his stature and daily defiance, but David understood from the beginning that his God was greater than fear and criticism. David’s faith in God carried him throughout his life and helped him to defeat the rest of the giants. You will have to defeat the giant of fear by faith in God, or else you will never defeat any other giant in your life. Every believer will find that their faith is the first thing Satan goes after so that he can keep you from being who you are supposed to be in your Christian walk. Establish your faith that God will never fail you no matter what giant may come your way, and you will be able to defeat the giant of fear.
The second giant you must defeat is the giant of other bibles. In the verse above, the giant carried a “new sword.” Settle in your heart now that the King James Bible is God’s inspired and preserved Word of God. God’s Word is the core of your faith. You must settle that God has preserved every word of the Scriptures for you today in the King James Bible. Never let the giants who always want to give you a new sword scare you into thinking that you are inferior because you don’t use their false bible. My friend, you don’t need a new sword; you just need to keep the old sword sharpened in your heart and life.
The third giant you must defeat is the giant of apathy. Just because you win the first battle doesn’t mean that you are going to easily ride through the rest of your life. The sons of the giants will always come to defeat you. One of the reasons God commands you to be sober and vigilant is because He knows that apathy is one of the greatest attitudes that defeats more believers. Apathy has destroyed more believers than any “big sin” has ever defeated. You must never lose your enthusiasm for God, and when it begins to wane, you must quickly get alone with God to keep the fire of God burning.
The fourth giant you must defeat is associations. David fought another giant whose spear was like a “weaver’s beam.” Associations will try to intertwine themselves into your life, and you must be so careful not to let these worldly associations weave themselves into your life. Many believers have been defeated because of weak associations.
The fifth giant you must defeat is the giant of changed methods. The last giant David faced had six fingers and toes on each hand and foot. Be careful about adding to or changing the methods that have worked in the past. The methods of soul winning, Sunday school, separation, and old fashioned preaching will still work today if you work these methods.
