Taken By God
Genesis 5:24
“And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.”
The need for God’s people to be like Enoch is an understatement. Enoch lived in times when man was evil, yet he still walked with God and continues to make a difference to this day. You must understand that the choice to walk with God is not dependent upon the spiritual climate of the day, but the choice to walk with God is a personal choice that must be chosen in spite of the spiritual climate of the day.
However, the one thing that separates Enoch from many others is found in three words, “God took him.” Yes, I know this means that God took Enoch to Heaven without him dying, but I also believe it shows what it was about Enoch and God that caused this relationship to flourish. If every believer were taken by God, the present spiritual climate of your surroundings would change because you would change. Let me point out the importance of these three words in your life and what they mean.
First, it means that Enoch made a personal choice to take God. This means two things; first, it means that he took God as his Saviour. You will never be taken by God until you first choose to make Christ your personal Saviour. Second, it means that you must choose daily to take God on your way. God never walks with someone with whom He is not invited. Have you invited God to walk with you today? You must personally choose to take God if you want Him to take you.
Second, you must totally take God without reserve. Enoch took God as much as God took Enoch. However, Enoch had no reserve on how far he would go with God. You must unreservedly take God and be willing to go with Him no matter where He takes you if you want God to take you.
Third, your life must revolve around God instead of making God revolve around your life. God is the central focus of Enoch’s relationship. Enoch did not make his relationship with God about himself, but he made God the central focus of his relationship, and everything about his life revolved around God.
When you take God the way that Enoch did, three things will happen in your life. First, God’s presence will grab your attention. It won’t be hard to make God your focus because anyone who has ever been in God’s presence is taken by God. In other words, you won’t be able to help yourself but to focus on God because His presence will demand your unreserved attention. You won’t be able to see anything else but God when He takes you.
Second, God will use you greater than you can imagine. When God chooses to use you, you will find that you could never imagine God using you to the degree that He chooses to use you. When you lose yourself in God, He will easily be able to use you because you won’t have any personal agenda that He will have to fight against.
Third, when God takes you, as in you are all-focused on God because of who He is, you will find that you will die to self and nothing will matter to you as long as God is working in your life. The verse above says that Enoch “was not.” In other words, when you are taken by God, you will find that God will remove all the bad habits in your life and you will be dead to self. When you are taken by God, you will find that your life will influence others to change, but it all starts with you choosing to take God.
