“And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;”
The Book of Acts starts with the apostles looking up toward Heaven as Jesus had just ascended. I don’t know why these men were gazing up towards Heaven, but I would assume they were gazing towards Heaven because they expected Jesus to come back. As they were gazing toward Heaven, an angel came and rebuked them for gazing and commanded them to go and do the works of God. The rest of the book, you see the apostles performing mighty acts, and they did these acts because they started doing actions instead of gazing towards Heaven. Let me make several statements about the importance of actions.
First, acts are never done without actions. The reason this book is called “The Acts of the Apostles” is because the apostles performed actions that resulted in acts. There would have been no Pentecost without the action of preaching. There would have been no great church built in Jerusalem without action from those who attended that great church. There would be no missionary trips by the Apostle Paul without his action to go.
You can never have acts without actions. Christianity is an action. You can’t serve God sitting down. You can’t serve God by sitting at home doing nothing. Just because you are not addicted to vices, and just because your marriage and family may seem to be in order doesn’t make you a great Christian. The act of the apostles being called Christians occurred because of their actions to serve God. God expects you to be active in His work. Inaction has never made one act, and inaction has never produced one great church or Christian. It always takes action by the believer for the great acts of God to be performed.
Second, actions are always a purposeful decision. You must decide to take action for God if you want to have acts that God has done through your life. Just as it is a decision to sit and do nothing, it is also a decision to decide to take action to do something for God. Desire is a wonderful thing, but you must take action for the desire to become a reality.
Third, actions influence others. Look at how many people were influenced to action in the Book of Acts. Many people were saved because of the actions of the Apostles. The Philippian jailer getting saved became an act of the apostles because they took action to witness to Him. Saul became an act of Stephen because he took action to preach on the street corner. When you take action for God, you will always influence others for good. Every great act is a result of someone taking action who influenced them. Every person who gets saved is an act because someone took action to go soul winning. You will find that God will produce more miraculous acts in your life when you perform more actions of faith.
Fourth, great works and lives are accomplished because of actions. The life of the Apostle Paul is filled with acts because it is filled with action. The churches of Antioch and Jerusalem are filled with acts because they were filled with action. The ministries of the preachers of old were filled with acts because they were filled with action. The great churches of the past generation were filled with acts because they were filled with action. Your life will be filled with great acts of God when it becomes filled with action for God. If you want the acts of God in your life, then start performing actions for Him.
