1 John 2:16
“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
The believer’s battleground against sin is always fought in the mind. You will find throughout the Scriptures the importance of the believer protecting their mind. Ephesians 6:17 shows the importance of putting on the helmet of salvation to protect the mind. 2 Corinthians 10:5 shows that the battlefield for sin is always in the imaginations of the mind. You must guard your mind at all costs if you are going to win the battle over sin.
However, the verse above reveals the three battles every believer will fight in the mind. Every battle that you fight in your walk with the LORD will be narrowed down to these three areas, and every battle won will be won the way that God shows us in this chapter. Let me show you the three battles you will fight and how you can win them.
The first battle every believer will fight will be the battle against the lust of the flesh. This battle is the battle to stay pure. Many believers have lost their purity before and after marriage because they didn’t win the battle over the lust of the flesh. Remember that yielding to the lust of the flesh always leads to death. Proverbs 2:18 shows us where the lust of the flesh leads when it says, “For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.” My friend, the battle to stay pure is a battle to stay alive. Always remember that the pleasure of the flesh only leads to the death of a clear conscience. If you don’t want to lose a clear conscience, you are going to have to win the battle over the lust of the flesh.
The second battle every believer will fight will be the battle against the lust of the eyes. The lust of the eyes is the desire to have possessions. Many believers have been sidelined in the Christian walk because they are more interested in gathering worldly possessions than they are with laying treasures up in Heaven. If the Devil can’t get your purity, he will always tempt you with worldly possessions. The problem with yielding to acquiring worldly possessions is that you will always desire the next thing the world puts out. Believer, don’t place your eyes on the things this world offers. Nice home, new technologies, expensive clothing, fancy cars, and the newest possessions never lead the believer to a satisfied life. You will never win the lust of the flesh until you are content with what the LORD has given you.
The third battle every believer fights will be the battle against the pride of life. The pride of life is a desire for position and titles. Pride is one of the greatest weapons the Devil has successfully used against the believer. Many believers have allowed education degrees and positional titles to be used to impress others only to displease the LORD. Pride is an everyday battle that you must fight because your flesh always wants to be better than others. If you don’t prefer others before yourself, pride will take over and you will start preferring yourself and yours before others.
The key to winning these battles is found in verse 17 which says, “And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” Doing the will of God is the only way to win the battle over the world. My friend, realize that you may get what you want in each of these areas, but once you obtain them, the satisfaction will pass away. The only place you will find enduring satisfaction that never passes away is in doing the will of God.
