“Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.”
The enemies of Christ did everything they could to keep the apostles from speaking about Christ and His doctrine. They had threatened them, and that did not stop them; so, the only thing left to do was to throw them in prison. However, though these enemies how the power to throw them in prison, they didn’t have the power to stop the power of Christ. God sent His angels to open the prison doors to let the apostles out. When the angel let them out, he commanded them, “Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people.” This command that the apostles heard is still the same command for every believer today. Let me point out this commission and what will hinder it from happening.
The first part of the command is to “go.” Christianity is an action. You will never please God as a believer by sitting; you can only please Him by serving. The command to “go” is an active command. If all you do is sit in church and never serve the LORD, you are not obeying the LORD. You can believe everything as you ought to believe, but what you believe means nothing if you are not going and doing what God commands you to do.
The second part of the command is to “stand.” In other words, God wants you to stand for right. You must be careful not to allow the persuasive voices that want you to change cause you to stop standing for truth. To be passive about what is right is to let right to die. It will not be easy to take a stand, but it wasn’t easy for the apostles to take a stand either.
The third part of the command is to “speak.” The lost will never hear the Gospel without you telling them. To never tell the lost how to get saved is nothing short of disobedience. There are many believers who believe what they are supposed to believe, but they never tell anyone how to get saved. Let me ask you, what does it benefit you to believe right, and yet never tell anyone about the right way to Heaven? It is good to go and serve in the church; it is wonderful that you stand for what you believe, but all of this avails the Gospel of Christ nothing if you don’t go and speak to others about how they can be saved. The power of the Gospel will never save one person if it is never spoken from your lips to the lost. You are to tell others about Christ as much as you are to stand for truth and serve in the church.
However, imagine if the apostles decided to stay in prison even though the angel opened the prison doors to bring them out. If they had stayed in prison, the world would have never heard the Gospel and gotten saved. I point this out because many believers have chosen to stay in their prison instead of following Christ’s commission. Let me ask you what is your prison that is keeping you from going, standing and speaking? Is your prison the fear of what others will say about you or do to you? Is worldliness and the desire to be accepted by the world the prison that is keeping you from obeying this commission? Is the desire for money the prison that is holding you back from your commission?
My friend, I don’t know what your prison may be, but I do know that God has the power to free you from it. You must by faith walk away from your prison to go serve the LORD, stand for right, and speak the Gospel to every lost person you know. Staying in your prison is your choice because God has given you the wherewithal to walk away from it.
