The Believer’s Identity
“And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.”
A person’s identity is what others know them to be. When someone asks about you, the first thing that comes to their mind is your identity. The first thing that would come to the mind of many people who know me would be that I am an evangelist. I have been an evangelist for so many years that it has become my identity. When a young man is looking for an evangelist to talk to so they can find out how to go into evangelism, it is not uncommon for my name to end up on their list of evangelists.
Many adjectives come to mind when you think about God, but the one adjective that best identifies God is that He is holy. When John described what the angels of Heaven were doing, he said that day and night they continued to say, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty.” Just saying that God is holy was not enough, but three times they declared that He is holy. I believe the reason they said it three times is because God’s holiness is such an awesome sight to see that in wonder they declared, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty.”
Christian, if God is so holy that the angels repeated He was holy three times, every believer should live in such a way that they represent God properly. Though I am known as an evangelist, the one desire I have is to have an identity like God that I am holy. I want people to be able to look at me and see God’s holiness through my life. Every believer should have this desire to live in such a holy manner that the world sees God’s holiness through them. Let me share with you a couple observations about God’s holiness that should challenge the believer to live a holier life.
First, God’s holiness was not just once a week, but day and night. My friend, if God is continually holy, so should the believer live a holy life day and night. Holy living should be done more than just on Sunday. The believer should live a holy life all the time. It is sad that most believers try to live a better life on Sunday because it is the day they go to church. I’m glad that people have such a respect for church that they try to put their best on for God, but remember that God is holy all the time and so should you be holy all the time. Don’t fall into Satan’s trap that one day of holy living is all that God expects. Always remember that holiness should be the standard for the Christian to aspire to reach both day and night.
Second, you will never live a holy life without allowing God to live through you. Sinners will never be holy, but redeemed sinners can yield to the Holy Spirit of God so that God’s holiness can shine through them. The purpose of living a holy life is not so that people can see the believer, but so that others can see God through the believer. You will fail to live a holy life if your purpose is to show others your goodness. Remember that there is no goodness in the believer; therefore, you will only be holy if you allow God to shine His holiness through you.
The only way the world will ever see God’s holiness is often through the life of the believer. Let me ask you, does the world get a good glimpse of God’s holiness through your life? Make it your daily prayer to ask God to show His holiness through your life, and make it your goal to shun sin so that the pureness of His holiness can be seen in your life.
