The Blessings of Trusting God
Jeremiah 17:7
“Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.”
The fact that God commands the believer to trust Him means there will be times in your life when it seems as though God could be wrong or is nowhere to be found. However, though it may seem that God is wrong or is nowhere to be found, He is never wrong and He is always with you.
There are two keywords in the verse above that must be understood so that you can understand the blessings of trusting God. The first keyword is “blessed.” To be “blessed” means to be happy. In other words, God is saying that the person who trusts in the LORD is a happy person. In other words, you don’t look to the external for happiness when you trust the LORD, but you find your happiness and joy in the LORD when you trust Him. The reason you are happy when you trust the LORD is because you are only looking to Him for your happiness and joy. It won’t matter what is going on in your world or in the world around you when you trust God because you found your joy is God in spite of what is going on around you.
The second keyword is “trusteth.” This word means to trust God continually. In other words, “trusteth” means to trust, and to trust, and to continue to trust. God is showing that He won’t always give the blessings for trusting Him immediately, but you must continue to trust Him until they come. My friend, if you expect the blessing from trusting God to come immediately, you will quickly stop trusting Him because God doesn’t always give His blessings immediately. Three results come from trusting God.
First, you will never be disappointed by trusting God. I’d rather trust God and be criticized by man than to trust a man and find that man’s ways were wrong. In all the years that I have served the LORD, I have never found God not to bless me for trusting in Him. No, trusting Him didn’t always give me the immediate results I wanted, but He blessed me because I continued to trust Him when I didn’t see a way. If the only thing that comes from trusting God is that you are holding on to Him, the fact that you are in His presence is the greatest blessing of all.
Second, you will find yourself secure when you trust in God. Verse 8 says, “For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters…” Trusting God calms the mind. You will find that you can remove all anxiety in life when you trust God because He gives perfect peace to those who trust in Him.
Third, you will find that you will be grounded in what you are doing when you trust in God. Verse 8 continues to say, “…and that spreadeth out her roots by the river…” In other words, when you trust God, you are not looking for the way out for you have already found that God is your way out. God promises in Proverbs 3:5-6 that He will direct your ways through whatever you face as long as you trust Him.
The greatest blessing about trusting God is that He will bless you in troubled times. Verse 8 shows the result of trusting Him when it says, “…and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” The most fruitful times of your life will be found when you trust God in times that demand that God’s way is not right. My friend, the greatest blessings of your life are obtained by trusting God in troubled times. Whatever you do, never stop trusting God.
