The Common Man

Mark 12:37
“David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly.”

The example of the Saviour for every age is a blueprint that should be followed in reaching people. It says in the verse above that the “common people heard him gladly.” It was the ordinary person who was not talented or rich who wanted to hear the Saviour, and not only did they want to hear Him, but they gladly responded to His preaching. On the other hand, those who had position and riches were the ones who attacked the Saviour, and they were eventually the ones who had Him crucified. Though Jesus directed His preaching and ministry to reach the common man, there were still those who had position and riches who also received His message and got saved. Let me give you several thoughts about the principle of reaching the common man.

First, every preacher and teacher should direct their message for the common man. One of the most common statements I have heard from people about my preaching and teaching is that it has been placed on the bottom shelf where everyone can glean a truth that will help their lives. If you want your preaching and teaching to make a difference in lives, you would be wise to preach to the heart of the people and not their head. Too many preachers and teachers are trying to entertain or astound those they preach and teach to for the sole purpose of trying to impress people with their intellect. My friend, how “smart” you are is not going to change one life. What changes lives is when truth is placed on the bottom shelf so that all can understand what is being delivered. You will find your preaching and teaching will have a greater impact on people when they can understand what you are saying.

Second, your focus with the Gospel should be towards the common man. One of the biggest mistakes many make today is that they rarely go after the poor and the common person with the Gospel. You will find more common people will get saved than the rich and influential. Yes, you will have a lot of work you will have to do after the common man gets saved, but it is the power of the Gospel that will change their lives. The Saviour’s ministry was commonly going after the poor of His day. Let me encourage you to take the Gospel to the common man. When the Gospel is taken to the common man, you will find that all men, rich or poor, will be reached with the Gospel.

Third, gear your ministry towards the common man. I often tell people who I meet as I go soul winning that my church is a “blue collar, multi-cultural” church. I want everyone we are trying to reach to understand that ALL people are welcome in our church. When you gear your ministry towards the common man, you will find that your ministry will be accepted by all men. If you gear your ministry towards the rich, the poor will not feel welcome in your church. I have found throughout the years that all people of all classes will feel welcome if the buildings and programs of the church are for the common person.

My friend, there is no shame in trying to reach the common man, because that is who our Saviour tried to reach. Let me encourage you to do everything in the ministry to reach the common person. If you will teach and preach, go soul winning, and gear your ministry for the common man, you will find that you will be successful in reaching all people.
