2 Corinthians 5:14 “For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:”
Something has to drive every person to do what they do, or else they won’t do it. What is it that makes a person get up early and work late in their business? The driving factor is they want to make a living for their family and be their own boss. What is it that causes an athlete to work out tirelessly every day and push themselves to practice when they don't feel like it? The driving factor is a championship and the desire to be the best at what they do. It doesn't matter what area of life you look at; everyone who is a success at what they do has a driving factor that compels or constrains them to do what they do even when they don't feel like doing it.
The same is true about the Christian life. Paul said, “For the love of Christ constraineth us;…” The word “constraineth” means to drive, push, pressure, restrain, or restrict. In other words, He was saying that the love of Christ is what pushed and drove him to do what He did and how he did it.
However, what is the love of Christ? John 3:16 answers this question when it says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Luke 19:10 shows us what the love of Christ is when it says, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” In other words, the love of Christ is to save the lost. Paul was saying that the one thing that constrained him and drove him not to do things he should not do and to do things that he should do was the fact that people need to be saved. Paul was saying that keeping the fact that the lost need a Saviour is what pushed him to live every waking hour to reach the lost for Christ.
Some have asked me what it is that drives me to push myself tirelessly in the ministry. My answer to these is that we live in a world that needs a Saviour, and I just cannot get to them fast enough to give the Gospel to them before they die. I know that everyone I give the Gospel to won’t get saved, but I want everyone to at least have one chance to make that choice. The thing that pushes me to wake up early every morning to study the Scriptures and walk with God in prayer is that I need something from God to help others to resolve their problems in life so that they could have the same focus that Paul had, and that is to get the Gospel to the lost.
My friend, there is a world around you that needs the Gospel of Christ. Let me ask you, is there a Hell? Is there a real place called Heaven? Do people have an eternity after they die? The answer to these questions is “Yes.” You are the person that could reach so many people for Christ if you would get focused on what really counts in life, and that is reaching the lost for Christ. Politics, pleasures, and financial profit are not the answer to this world’s issues or to the individual issues that many face every day in life. The answer to all of these problems is the Gospel, which will change people on the inside.
What is it that “constraineth” you to do what you do? If your answer is not the love of Christ, your answer is the wrong answer. The love of Christ should be the only driving factor in the life of the believer, and it is the only thing that gives complete satisfaction in life. The love of Christ will drive you when you see this world through the eyes of Christ.
