The Fire

Zechariah 13:9 “And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.”

If you want to be used by God, He will have to send you through the fire of trials so that He can use you in a mighty way. Nobody has ever been used mightily by God without first going through the fire; it is the fire that makes the believer a tool that God can use.

To say that you want to be used by God means that you must expect to go through the fire. In music class as a teenager, our teacher used to tell us to be careful about which songs we sang because the message often becomes the fire we must endure. One of those songs she used to remind us was, Whatever It Takes. She would say that whatever is a big word, but God can use you if you are willing to take the “whatever.” What she was teaching us was the truth that comes from the verse above. Let me show you several things about the fire and its purpose in your life.

First, the fire reveals who we trust. For God to bring us through the fire means that we are willing to walk with Him and trust Him as we go through it. The only one who knows the way through the fiery trials is God. The fire will never be able to do its work in your life if you run from it as God tries to bring you through it.

Second, the fire cleanses us. Just as the fire refines gold, so the fire reveals the weaknesses that you need to strengthen as a believer. You will never know what is holding you back from God using you in a greater way without the fire purifying your life by revealing your weaknesses so you can remove them.

Third, the fire perfects us. The word “refine” not only means to purify, but it also means to perfect. In other words, the fire fine-tunes the believer into a tool that God can use in a greater way. Realizing that the fire is making you a better tool for God to use is how you can make it through the fire. The fire is not trying to destroy you, but it is building you. Let the fire do its work in your life so that God can fine-tune you into a better tool that He can use.

Fourth, the fire gives us a closer relationship with God. You build a closer relationship with God as you learn to walk through the fire with Him. If the only thing that trials do in your life is to get you closer to God, it is worth going through the fire with Him. You cannot get to know God intimately without the fire. If you want to get to know God better, you will have to go through the fire because it draws you closer to God, causing you to see His power in a greater way.

The key to this verse is that God says, “And I will bring the third part through the fire…” I want you to notice that God brought you to the fire and is willing to walk with you through it. In other words, God led you to the fire you are in, and He knows that you can make it through it if you stay by His side. This verse doesn't say that God would remove the fire, but that He will let the fire make you better AS you go through it. This verse teaches that God is the one who brings us through the fire. My friend, let the fire do its work in your life that God wants it to do because it is the fire that God uses to make you the tool that He can use in a greater way.
