“And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:”
There are many things about Isaac that you can look to and learn how God can use you. One of the great things about Isaac is that he did not rest on the success of his father, but he built upon it. He could have easily tried to destroy what God did through his father, but he understood that it was wiser to build upon his father’s success instead of trying to build his own legacy.
Not only did Isaac build upon his father’s success, but once he became great, he kept going forward and continued to grow. Isaac’s greatness happened because he kept going forward. When his father died, he kept going forward and “waxed great.” Issac “went forward” once he achieved some success. Isaac knew the importance of continuing to grow, and that forward direction in his life caused him to become “very great.” Now, you must understand that Isaac didn’t strive to become very great, but he just did what he was supposed to do and never stopped going forward. Several keys of God’s blessings on your life are found in this little verse.
First, never think you have arrived because of your heritage. Just because your parents have done something for God doesn’t mean that you have achieved anything. The achievements that you have experienced in life, are they because of another’s hard work or because of your hard work? Many live in the achievements of others and have become legends in their own minds when they really have done nothing at all.
Second, it takes hard work for great accomplishments. It says about Isaac that he “waxed great.” Isaac’s successes didn’t happen overnight, but they happened over time with hard work. Great success never happens overnight, but it takes time and hard work to see great accomplishments. There ought to be people of God who have a desire for God to do something great and are willing to work hard over time to see Him do something miraculous. God is not going to hand great works to you, but you must be willing to be patient with your hard work to see God’s power work through your life.
Third, keep going forward when success comes. Once you experience success, keep going in the same direction with the same works that brought that success. Enjoy success for a day, and then move on the next day and keep doing what you have always done. Never stop the momentum of the forward direction of faith because once you slow it down, it is hard to get going again. Forget your success of the past and keep going forward.
Third, keep growth in your perspective of the forward motion. Continued growth only happens with continuing to go forward after experiencing some success. The fact that Isaac grew means he didn’t arrive when he “waxed great.” Likewise, just because you achieved a great work doesn’t mean you have arrived. You must remember that you still have a long ways to go no matter how far you have gone.
My friend, stop seeking greatness and seek the forward motion. It is continually going forward that will cause God to do very great works through you. No matter what you have done or what you are facing, the secret to seeing God’s powerful works in your life is continually going forward.
