The Great Mindset
2 Chronicles 2:5
“And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods.”
Solomon’s mindset when building the temple is the mindset that every believer should have for the work of God. Solomon realized that this place he was building was not for himself, but it was for his God. He realized that any work for God is a great work. The greatness of this work caused Solomon not to cut any corners when it came to building the temple. He made sure that everyone involved in this great work treated it as such. He didn’t want people involved in the work whose mindset was that this just some other place; rather, he wanted people who understood the magnitude of this place that he was building for God.
The word “great” means several things. It means that the work of building the temple was important and should be treated as such. It means that it was the principal thing in his life and that it must supersede any other thing that was happening. It means that it was supreme and that everything else must take second seat to this great work. Solomon’s great mindset is the key that every believer should have concerning their work for the LORD and their involvement in whatever they do for God. Let me share several observations concerning the importance of having a great mindset.
First, a great mindset is a choice. You must choose to believe that what you do for God is great. How you treat God’s work reveals what you consider important in life. Whatever you consider as the most important thing in your life will be the thing with which your mind will be consumed. God’s work will consume your mind when you choose to make God’s work great.
Second, your mindset towards God’s work reveals how great you believe God is. Solomon said that the building of this house was great because “great is our God.” When you see God as a great God is when you will treat His work as great. God cannot be great in one’s life if they don’t treat His work as such. Your mindset towards God is reflected in your treatment of His commands and your effort towards His work.
Third, the greatness of God’s work should take priority over everything else in your life. This does not mean that you must quit your job to do God’s work, but it does mean that your job and all the extracurricular activities in your life should take second-seat to what you do for God. Sadly, we live in times when believers plug God into the empty holes of their lives when they should plan everything in their life around what God wants them to do. The priority of God’s work in your life reveals whether God sits as first in your life or somewhere below. Please understand that any place other than first place in your life is the wrong place for God. God should take first place in every aspect of your life.
Fourth, treat the greatness of God’s work importantly. My friend, never give a second-rate effort in what you do for God. The things you do for God should never just be “ok.” You should make sure that what you do for God is done to the best of your ability. If what do for God is just “ok,” then what you are doing for God is not ok. You may not be able to afford the best, but you can do the best with what you have. Never cut corners with the work of God, but do your best with God’s work realizing that it is a great work and should be treated as such.
