The Great Sin

post-title

Ezekiel 28:5 “By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:”

One of the great mistakes of the prince of Tyrus that led to his great sin was that he thought he was something because of God's blessings instead of being thankful to God and staying humble. The prince of Tyrus became wealthy because of his wisdom, but he forgot that his wisdom came from God. He didn't gain the wisdom on his own, but he gained the wisdom because God gave him wisdom. When his heart was lifted up because of what he had is when his destruction was set. Verse 6 shows how prideful he became when it says, “Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God;” The prince of Tyrus got to the point that he thought he could get what he had on his own, but he found out when he lost everything that he still needed God. Let me point out a few observations about this great sin of self-reliance.

First, everything you have is because of God. There is no quality that you have that you gave to yourself. You didn't give yourself beauty; God gave that to you. If you were the one who gave yourself your beauty, then you should be able to keep yourself from getting older, but you can't. You are not the one who gave yourself wisdom; God is the one who gives wisdom. You are not the one who made your business grow; God is that one who helped your business to grow. You are not the one who made your ministry flourish; God is the one who made your ministry flourish. No matter what you have, God is the one who gave it to you, and you should never forget that. The moment that you forget that God is the one who has given you everything is the moment that pride takes over your heart.

Second, your blessings don’t make you someone special. Just because God has blessed you does not make you better than anyone else. If we are not careful, we will think that we are something special because God has blessed us. You are not the one who gave you your blessings, so why do you think you are someone special because you have them? Always remember that God’s blessings on your life and ministry show His power and mercy to bless someone like you. When you start believing that you are someone special because of God's blessings on your life is when your heart will be lifted up as God, just like the prince of Tyrus.

Third, your blessings should point you to the God who gave them to you. My friend, always remember that the God who has chosen to bless you because of his mercy is the same God who can close the spout of his blessings if you start taking credit for that which He has given you. The blessings of God on your life should always cause you to look up to God and not to look inward to yourself. Your blessings should cause you to see your frailty and God’s omnipotence. Your blessings should cause you to see your inadequacy and God’s omniscience.

Let me ask you, what is it that you think you can do on your own without God? What is it that you think you can supply to yourself without God’s help? Always remember that everything that you have has come to you because of God and nothing of yourself. Let your blessings keep you humble instead of prideful, and you will find that God will continue to keep the facet of blessings open towards your life.
